The Muscogee Native Americans (also known as the Creek) were the first inhabitants of the area that would later become Bowdon, GA. The land was ceded to the state of Georgia in 1827 in a treaty. In 1853, the first known American settlers selected the site of their town and purchased land parcels in an auction. The most expensive lot sold for $10.50, which is roughly $300 in today’s dollars. The town was named after Congressman Frank Welch Bowdon, who helped the residents secure a post office.

Bowdon College, established in 1856, was the first college in Georgia to allow women admittance. It shut doors in 1936. Today, Bowdon is the sort of town where all the neighbors are on the first-name basis with one another and greet one another as they stroll down the main street on a warm evening. True to its nickname, the Friendly City, the residents readily welcome visitors.

Right on the Alabama-Georgia border, Bowdon is a great place to rent an RV. It’s close to Talladega National Forest, and Atlanta, GA is only 60 miles to the east. The closest large town is Carrollton, GA, about 13 miles east.

The Great Outdoors

Western Georgia is in the heart of farmlands, and though most of the land is privately owned, the locals and out-of-town visitors still find a way to find their recreational fun. Some fish from bridges and the side of the roads. Others seek out the tiny pockets of wilderness run by the state or county government. And others head across the Alabama-Georgia state border in a Bowdon camper rental with eyes for only Talladega National Forest.

It’s no wonder. The Talladega National Forest, clocking in at nearly 400,000 acres, is so vast and seemingly endless that it can feel like civilization has all but disappeared. It’s common for hikers to not ever encounter another soul on the less-trafficked trails. Small waterfalls are scattered across the park, some appearing only in springtime. The best-known one is High Falls, which is considered Alabama’s most photogenic fall. In autumn, the lush greenery transforms into blazing red, orange, and yellow, virtually setting the forest landscape on fire. Sharp-eyed adventurers can spot glimpses of the fleet white-tailed deer as they bound through the dense woods. Other common animals include quails, turkeys, foxes, and raccoons. Endangered animals like gopher tortoise and red-cockaded woodpecker are known to make their homes in this park; they’re harder to spot, naturally. Water-skiing is a popular activity on the lakes, but fishermen need not fear. There are secluded coves, nooks, and quiet streams where the noise and activity won’t disturb fish. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of bass and trout. Camping too is a popular recreational activity. There’s nothing like waking up to birdsong right outside your Bowdon travel trailer rental. There are several campgrounds throughout the park, some rustic and barebone, and others offering hookups.

RV Parks

When searching for an RV rental in Bowdon, GA, be sure to figure out where to park overnight. The country roads are narrow and don’t have pullover sites. Fortunately, there are several campgrounds and RV parks in the area that can accommodate anything ranging from campers to a Bowdon motorhome rental. John Tanner Park near Helen, GA, though small, is quite picturesque. Situated adjacent to a small lake, tall pines shade the lots, giving some respite from the southern humidity. Although amenities are fairly barebone, there is a beach and a mini-golf course for visitors to enjoy.

Alternatively, Big Oak RV Park, out near Tallapoosa, GA, might be a candidate. The facility is pet-friendly, has full hookups for your RV, and as an added plus, it’s open year-round.

Exploring the City

Bowdon is the sort of town where people congregate at the local high school for a Friday night football game and holds parades down the main street. A Bowdon motorhome rental, though, makes it easy to go explore the surrounding towns and find some fun.

Want to know what life was like in this part of Georgia millions of years ago? The West Georgia Museum of Tallapoosa has several exhibitions showcasing the local dinosaurs whose fossils were found in the area and interpretative displays and signage detailing the environment at the time. The other exhibitions range from early 1600 acknowledges the local Native American tribes to the early 1900s.

Get a break from the intense humid summers at Six Flags White Water. Located up in Marietta, GA, this water park has over 20 different rides. From heart-gripping water slide plunges to soothing wave pools, there’s something for everyone. The food court won’t disappoint. Delicious ice cream sprinkled with confectioneries and other frozen treats are standard snacks, and for the adults, beer is available as well.

Before you tucker down for the night, stop at one of the local BBQ joints. Georgia claims its BBQ rivals the best of Texas and Kansas. One thing that can be for certain: Bowdon’s BBQ restaurants are finger-lickin’ good. Pick up a plate, kick up your heels outside your Bowdon RV rental, and go to town enjoying that delicious meal.
