If you are planning to book an RV in Douglas County, Georgia, Douglasville is a great city to set up camp. Located just west of downtown Atlanta, Douglasville is a vibrant city with a small-town feel that offers a plethora of things to see and do while traveling on your next RV rental vacation.

Formally established in 1875, Douglasville was formed during a time when New South ideals were the trend, reshaping existing villages and influencing development in new railroad towns being built from the ground up. Douglasville was one of these new railroad towns. To best encapsulate the New South image and philosophy, businessmen and political leaders who helped develop Douglasville took special care to ensure that the town had everything it needed to be successful as a thriving New South town. The railroad was, of course, the primary development that the rest of the town’s growth depended on, however, the New South image required a cotton mill, hotel, bank, and a commercial district as well.

Today, Douglasville is home to more than 30,000 residents, including several recent Olympic medal winners such as Elana Meyers and Kristi Castlin, and famous author Dorothy Padgett who wrote “Jimmy Carter: Elected President with Pocket Change and Peanuts”.

In addition to the residents, Douglasville is also home to the largest shopping mall in West Georgia, as well as Sweetwater Creek State Park and the Douglas County Butterfly Trail. Even with all the development in the region, there is plenty of opportunity to experience the great outdoors with an RV rental in Douglasville while never being more than a few minutes away from restaurants, shops, museums and more!

Discover Douglasville

The Great Outdoors

Reconnecting with nature is convenient when you rent an RV and that is a big reason why many of us vacation that way. While you will not be able to set up your Douglasville rental RV for overnight stays at Sweetwater Creek State Park, visitors to the park will have access to more than 2,500 acres of peaceful wilderness just minutes from downtown Atlanta. Enjoy a relaxing stroll along a streamside trail through the woods, leading to historic ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill that was destroyed during the Civil War. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of the rapids by continuing the trail beyond the mill, to the top of rocky bluffs. Other trails throughout the park also offer a variety of fauna and flora through fields and forest alike. In addition to the hiking and walking trails, the park is home to the George Sparks Reservoir which offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding as well as fishing, during the warmer months.

For the nature and history enthusiasts, another great destination to visit with a Douglasville motorhome rental is the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Just a short drive north from Douglasville, Kennesaw Mountain is at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Mountains. The park features a museum where you can learn about local history including details about the Native American Cherokee tribe that once thrived in the region. The history also covers other information about the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War and a look at the modern-day aspects of the region.

RV Parks

Because Douglasville has become a sprawling metropolis, there are only a few RV parks available directly in Douglasville. Surrounding towns such as Villas Rica or Austell also make great centrally-located options for setting up your Douglasville travel trailer rental. There are a variety of other options in the region as well, so definitely do not feel limited by just these three parks. Depending on what your visit will include, you may want to be closer to Atlanta, or in a more scenic location where you can stargaze each night.

Many of the RV parks in Douglasville and the surrounding area offer all the amenities you may be looking for, including pull-through sites with 30- and 60-amp hookups, WiFi, water, and laundry facilities. Other options are a bit more rustic and may only offer access to showers/restrooms and a site to park the Douglasville camper rental, without any type of hookups for water or electric.

Exploring the City

Once thriving as a bustling southern railroad town, the Central Business District of downtown Douglasville is now included on the National Register of Historic Places. Featuring a multitude of one- and two-story brick buildings from the mid-19th through mid-20th centuries, visitors can take in Victorian-era architecture while visiting the small shops and eateries nearby. Also, downtown and throughout Douglasville and Douglas County are several recognizable locations which have been featured in popular films including Stranger Things, The Hunger Games, and even an MTV Series titled Finding Carter. Spots like these are recognizable by small signs that say, “DC Film Trail” and they always make for a great selfie!

Visitors in Douglasville can also visit the O’Neal Plaza which frequently hosts performances and festivals throughout the year. One of the more popular festivals held here is the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival. Those who appreciate the arts and history can also visit the Douglas County Cultural Arts Center on Campbellton Street or the Douglas County Museum of History and Art on West Broad Street. No matter where you set up camp, Douglasville looks to be a great destination for your next RV rental vacation.
