The states of Alabama and Georgia are home to the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, an ideal motorhome camping destination. Covering over 11,000-acres, the refuge is spread over several counties in both states and is located on the Walter F George Lake, locally referred to as Lake Eufaula, that flows along the Chattahoochee River. The closest city to Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is Eufaula, located about 10 miles from the refuge. Renting an RV is a convenient way of getting around, and you’ll find a range of affordable RV rentals in Barbour County. Other cities not too far away include Phenix City in Alabama and Columbus in Georgia.

Camping at Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge opens up lots of fun, outdoor recreation for visitors. Known primarily for fishing, the refuge is a hotspot for anglers. Once inhabited by Muscogee Creek Indians, who would hunt and fish in the land occupied by the wildlife refuge, European settlers later occupied it. In 1964 the wildlife refuge came into being, primarily to provide a place for migratory waterfowl and other species of animals and birds. Today, visitors keen on nature and wildlife viewing can access the scenic surroundings too!

Getting Outdoors

Camping with an RV is a great way to soak in the picturesque wildlife refuge. A delight for anglers, Lake Eufaula, is known as one of the finest largemouth bass fishing lakes in the country, often being referred to as the ‘Big bass capital.’ Open through the year for fishing; anglers can fish from the bank (only during the daytime) or a boat. Remember to carry a valid fishing license when fishing at Lake Eufaula.

Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places in the state for wildlife viewing. There’s an eight-mile drive that goes through the refuge, and you can spot alligators, raptors, deer, fox, squirrels, and songbirds. There’s an observation tower that overlooks the Houston Bottoms area where you can spot waterfowl during winter months.

Hunting is another sought-after activity that visitors can look forward to during their RV rental vacation. The refuge allows hunting of doves, deer, waterfowl, squirrel, and rabbit. Refuge-specific regulations are in place and must be followed by visitors at all times, and necessary hunting permits must be procured ahead of time. The most popular hunting at Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is archery hunting for white-tailed deer and waterfowl.

Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge also doubles up as a fine outdoor location for wildlife photography, so bring your camera along with you.

Lake Eufaula and the wildlife refuge are, of course, the biggest attractions, but in addition to these natural scenic attractions, there’s more!
