Perhaps due to its large volume of cotton shipped annually in the 19th century, Woodstock was once a stop on the Louisville and Nashville line, a freight and passenger railway that transported rope, cotton and other agricultural commodities in the mid-1800s. Sections of the line were even pressed into hauling troops and supplies during the American Civil War. The L & N Railroad and its successors closed in the 1980s, but it didn't stop Woodstock from becoming a fast-growing suburb of Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, 30 miles to the south. Both I-575 and State Highway 92 pass right through the center of the town, so when you book an RV in Woodstock, GA, the possibilities of where to go open up.

Discover Woodstock

From Battlegrounds to Blue Ridge Country

Drive your motorhome rental in Woodstock south and follow State Highway 92 for about 17 miles, and you'll arrive at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. It’s a delightful place to take a nature walk, raft through the rugged shoals, fish on the misty waters, or simply enjoy an afternoon picnic. From here, you're not that far from an encounter with marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. While in town, view the displays at the World of Coca-Cola, or take a look at the behind-the-scenes of TV news network at the CNN Center. Martin Luther King Jr.'s national historic site is also here; the revered leader of the Civil Rights Movement was born in Atlanta.

During the American Civil War, Georgia was one of the Confederate states, so there are many historic places near and far that played a key role in the unfolding of events. And this is where you get to put your RV rental in Woodstock to good use. A mere 20-minute drive south along I-575 takes you to the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park where opposing forces fought from June 19 until July 2, 1864. Farther out, 160 miles south via I-75, the Andersonville National Historic Site served as a Confederate military prison. Towards the end of the war, the 'Death Knell of the Confederacy' was heard at Chattanooga, 100 miles north of Woodstock.

Don’t overlook the outdoor offerings of these historic national parks. They’re crisscrossed by hundreds of miles of hiking trails suitable to all experience and fitness levels.

Venture farther out into the stunning Blue Ridge country with your Woodstock travel trailer rental and drive up to the top of Georgia's highest peak. Set off from Helen, a historic sawmill town with a Bavarian vibe, 75 miles north of Woodstock and make your way up the summit through the forested mountains, valleys and foothills of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Follow the 41-mile Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway to get back to Helen, or plan for a multi-day trip so you can hike a section of Georgia's Appalachian Trail.

Where to Park Your RV

Woodstock's total land area is a little more than 11 square miles, so the closest RV parks tend to be farther out of the Olde Towne. The upside of the town’s small size is that you can take the trolley and see all of downtown in less an hour! While almost 10 miles away, the lakeside Victoria Campground is within the town border with a Walmart two miles away. The closest, Payne Campground, is at Acworth about 6 miles to the west. The closest Walmart is in Woodstock, three miles away.

If you're heading north to Blue Ridge country, you can leave your RV trailer rental in Woodstock at RV campgrounds in Helen or right within the Unicoi State Park where you can set off for an epic hike on the great Appalachian Trail. A campsite for the Woodstock RV rental will not only have full hookups, but there are dump stations and a host of delightful amenities to facilitate easier hosting of events, and there is also on-site access to groceries and restaurants. The nearest gas station is a mile away while the nearest Walmart is 15 miles to the south.

What to See Around Ye Olde Towne

The Woodstock Trolley makes a stop at the Elm Street Cultural Arts Village, so it might be worth getting off there to see if there are musicals, plays or improvs scheduled. Or make good use of the city’s bike share system to get around town more vigorously, see its quirky public art installations, or sample a few of the mountain bike trails at Olde Rope Mill Park.

Rent a paddleboard or a kayak for a peaceful escape on Lake Allatoona. For some raucous fun, head to the Historic Dixie Speedway to watch motorcycle and car races, monster truck competitions, and even concerts any time of the year. End the day with a stroll around Olde Towne, with shops and brick sidewalks that date back to the late 19th century, or a contemplative walk on the city's Greenprints Trail System. Either way, you deserve a drink, and where else to do it better than at a local brewery.

With its proximity to iconic national parks and cities rich in history, northern Georgia opens you up to a world of possibilities. Take a cue from the travel pioneers of the past, rent a motorhome in Woodstock and see where the roads of Georgia lead you.
