If you're looking for a camper van that sings Tom Petty and Hoizer, makes the best sunrise coffee, and automatically veers toward the coast, Wings is your guy. How about a comfortable sofa / bed conversion, exquisite hardwood interior, and a completely smell-less composting toilet? Why is it named Wings you ask? Because your soul will take a deep breath and smile when you spread your wings and slide into the plush-covered captain's chair in this 1988 Ford E-150. (I know, the metaphor doesn't fit literally, but you get the image, right?) Don't let the age deter you; this vehicle has been completely redone from top to bottom. Interior entirely refinished by a master woodworker, room to sleep two adults, or potentially two adults and one small child (or a four-legged friend), kitchen set up with working stove and sink, a 35-quart Yeti cooler and private toilet area with collapsable curtains. The bench seat pulls out into a bed and the top loft also slides out, making easy beds for you each to have your separate sleeping space. Also, if you want your friends to meet up with you for the day, both the captain's chairs turn around to make a cozy living room seating for four. The vehicle comes equipped with a marine battery and plenty of receptacles for your devices and an exterior shower head connected to a pump and a 18-gallon fresh water tank. The exterior is about iconic as a vehicle can get, with custom racks for surfboards or paddle boards, and I promise you'll get nods of affirmation and shaka signs until you end your day watching the sunset with some local brews. The mechanics on this vehicle are very well maintained. The engine on it purrs and can handle the open road like a dream. Comfort wise, it doesn't have A/C or cruise control, though the completely re-insulated body (with 100% recycled blue jeans) doesn't need it. Just open the windows and let the Michigan shore blow through.

What's included

Included with the rental are two collapsable REI camp chairs, cookware, utensils, linens, and some other items to make it special including coffee, spices, candles, and some extra string lights to dress up your campsite. (Which can literally be a Walmart parking lot if thats your vibe.)

Delivery and pickup within 100mi radius available upon request.

Recommendations

If you're around Lake Michigan in the summer, this rig is perfect for a few days at Grand Haven State Park on the Lake Michigan shoreline or at Leelenau Peninsula.

Other things to note

Furry friends welcome! (With a small extra fee, but I know how the four-legged children need to come along too!) Also, festivals are A-ok, but no smoking in the Wings; its lungs only want pure air and of course extra curry spice.

Meet your host, Levi

Hi there! A little about myself, I'm a musician, educator, skater, and aspiring weekend surfer. I'm from California but have lived in Michigan since I was five. (I think some part of me is hanging out in SoCal, somewhere between La Jolla and the Santa Monica pier I assume). I'm a Dad to two children and one border collie named Beauford...who is obviously named for the drummer in the Dave Matthews Band. I love owning Wings and take it out to Lake Michigan every chance I get. Some interesting facts about me are that I once spent an entire month living on an island in Nicaragua, I started and ran an urban farm in West Michigan for seven years, and I once had have lunch with Wendell Berry. I'm really excited to join the Outdoorsy community, and will work to make sure you really enjoy your trip with me. If you have any questions at all, please let me know! Excited to meet you.

My dogs and I went to a very special event in Nova Scotia. Although a little small for me and the dogs it’s the perfect size for 2 people and 1 furry friend. Levi was great, went over everything I needed to know plus a handy little booklet for reference. Wings and I did have a mechanical malfunction and Levi was totally on it, advising me and Outdoorsy. He was in almost constant communication with me and approved whatever I needed to do for repairs. It was a new part that he had just had installed that failed, so he is truly on top of the mechanics of this van. I may well ask to rent it for a much shorter trip that’s how much I enjoyed camping in it. Thanks Levi for helping me make the most of this special trip!

My husband and I took Wings on an 8 day road trip across the beautiful U.P.! From Tahquamenon Falls to the Porkies up to Copper Harbor and everywhere in between, Wings was a reliable and comfortable place to call home. Levi was very personable and explained everything we needed to know about Wings. This was an unforgettable bucket list trip and we couldn't be more satisfied with our experience. We are already ready to start planning our next trip with Wings. Thanks Levi!

Have a question?Get answers directly from the owner

Q.What flexibility is available for picking up and dropping off the RV?
A.
I generally have flexibility either way a few hours. However, I ask you be reasonable. For instance, if we are planning on meeting and you text me 10 minutes before that you're going to be 5 hours late, that's not cool...But a request a few days ahead of time that you need a little more time? I'm pretty cool with that.

Q.Can I park at your house while I'm gone?
A.
Short answer - yep! I live on a Cul-de-sac in a very safe neighborhood and there is plenty of parking. So generally I just switch out renters' vehicle with Wings while they're gone, then they can pick it right back up when they return!
