Hailey is one of the best little towns to rent an RV when visiting Idaho’s central valleys. Not only is it brimming with cultural and historical attractions, but it’s also just down the road from one of America’s most famous ski resorts, Sun Valley. Also nearby is the Sawtooth National Forest, an excellent place for a backcountry adventure thanks to its many campgrounds and hiking trails. As such, Hailey is popular year-round with skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers seeking thrills in the beautiful landscapes surrounding this quaint town.

If you’re considering getting an RV rental in Hailey during the month of July, don't miss its Days of the Old West Independence Day celebration. There’s a mock shoot out in the middle of the downtown, followed by a parade, rodeo, live music, and excellent food.

Discover Hailey

The Great Outdoors

Thanks to its proximity to Sun Valley, Hailey is a mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts. If you book an RV in Hailey during the winter months, there's a ton of great skiing and snowboarding to be enjoyed there. However, the spring and summer are great too, with many choosing to hike the ski hill, though there are also over 400 miles of mountain biking trails along with fantastic streams to fly fish.

If you’ve got a set of wheels, one of the best places to go cycling when you get a travel trailer rental in Hailey is the Wood River Trail. The asphalt paved rail trail extends for over 20 miles between Bellevue and Sun Valley, making it one of the best ways to see nature when you choose a campervan rental in Hailey.

For a peaceful stroll, check out the Sawtooth Botanical Garden in Ketchum. While the harsh winters of Idaho preclude the garden from having too elaborate of a botanical display, it’s a popular place to sit and contemplate. It’s also the site of one of only a few Buddhist prayer wheels in the U.S. that have been blessed by the Dalai Lama.

RV Parks

The pristine forests surrounding Hailey make it a popular destination for RV campers, and it shows in the excellent selection of parks and campgrounds in the area. Riverside RV Park and Campground, just outside the town of Bellevue, is one of the closest campgrounds when you get a motorhome rental in Hailey. It’s a fairly small operation, so expect a quieter experience but with full hookups and access to hot showers.

Another option is Meadows RV Park, which is just up the highway from Hailey, near the town of Ketchum. Their sites also have full hookups for your Hailey camper rental along with showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. It’s quite close to the Sun Valley ski resort too, which is open during the summer for hiking and mountain biking.

If those RV parks feel too developed for your tastes, there are also a number of primitive campgrounds in the nearby national forest lands. Wolftone and Bridge campgrounds are just a short drive away and offer sites along Deer Creek. There are no electrical hookups or even drinking water, just a vault toilet or two, so come prepared to rough it when you come here with the camper rental from Hailey.

Exploring the City

History buffs traveling through Hailey will surely want to make a visit to the Blaine County Historical Museum, which contains a fascinating mixture of artifacts from the town’s past. It’s not very large, only taking up a couple of rooms, but it’s packed with fascinating pieces such as a Ford Model A car and an intriguing story of a circus elephant who got loose in the late 1800s and ran wild through the city.

Another interesting slice of Hailey’s history can be found at the Wood River Valley Ore Wagon Museum in Ketchum. It focuses on the area’s mining history prior to the Industrial Revolution, when horses and oxen were the primary forms of transport for valuable minerals. If you come during the town’s Wagon Days celebration in the fall, you can even see wagons being pulled by a few teams of draft animals.

Can’t get enough of the slopes? Check out the Ketchum/Sun Valley Heritage and Ski Museum. It’s filled with all kinds of great memorabilia from the early days of snow sports including old-time ski bindings, photos of the movie stars who frequented the resort, but also artifacts from some of the more traditional industries of Central Idaho like mining and forestry. The Sun Valley region is also well known for its artistic community, so be sure to explore a couple of the art galleries and studios that line Ketchum’s downtown area. You just might find the perfect piece to remind you of your RV rental adventure in Hailey.
