Originally a tiny farming community, Arlington Heights began to attract businesses and people when one of the town’s founders, William Dunton, convinced the Illinois & Wisconsin Railroad to build a stop in Arlington Heights. After the railroad stop was completed, Arlington Heights began to prosper and rapidly grow; shipments of produce and other agricultural products could easily reach the city of Chicago, and with the advent of the automobile, even more people made their way to Arlington Heights to live or visit on weekend trips.

Now Arlington Heights is a thriving bedroom community of Chicago, with the best of both worlds considering its location on the edge of the metro area. Several interstates and highways can be found either in town, or just outside, so making your way around the region in your Arlington Heights camper rental is a breeze. Chicago’s O’hare International Airport is one of the biggest and best in the country, and sits just miles outside of Arlington Heights, so making your way to town is not a problem either. The wonderful public transit system enables visitors to quickly and easily travel through the Chicago metro area, so when you book an RV in Arlington Heights, you are connected to many of the incredible towns and villages nearby.

Discover Arlington Heights

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Arlington Heights has an impressive reputation when it comes to its affinity for the great outdoors. With tons of parks, recreational facilities, pools, sports complexes, and miles of biking and hiking trails, this village proves that nature can be seamlessly integrated into a community. Frontier Park is centrally located, with peaceful walking paths, tennis courts, a pool, and even wireless internet so people can get work done while enjoying the sunshine. Pioneer Park is another excellent park to explore after you rent an RV in Arlington Heights, where people can play basketball or tennis, go for a swim, or even go ice skating in the wintertime.

It’s easy to forget that there is more to Illinois than Chicago, though there are exquisite natural wilderness and recreation areas peppered throughout the state. Bordering Arlington Heights to the south, Ned Brown Preserve has been declared a national natural landmark for its special flatwood forests and delicate wetlands ecosystem. This peaceful sanctuary also includes miles of biking trails which prove to be an exceptional way to see the forest. Illinois Beach State Park, in the northernmost corner of Illinois by Kenosha, Wisconsin, has inviting coastline on Lake Michigan. This brilliant coastal park is also a national natural landmark, and is home to endangered migratory birds.

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie should definitely be on your list of places to see when you rent an RV; Illinois is the “Prairie State” after all. Midewin is a crucial biome consisting of different types of meadows and prairieland, where bison have made a resurgence, freely roaming and grazing. If time is no issue, Shawnee National Forest in the southern tip of Illinois by St. Louis, Missouri, is a fabulous place to bring your Arlington Heights motorhome rental. Stunning scenery throughout the seven wilderness areas are gorgeous, but the Gardens of the Gods Wilderness Area is definitely the most interesting; the unique sandstone geological features are fun for climbing or seeing the last rays of the sun before it disappears over the horizon for the night.

City Attractions

Despite its high population, Arlington Heights masterfully retains the essence of a small village, only with more attractions and energy. Arlington Heights Historical Museum recounts the history of the village, with exciting exhibits and walking tours. The local historical society curates this institution with multiple historic buildings like the Frederick W. Müller Victorian Home built in 1882, the replica 19th-century cabin, or the old soda pop factory that's over 100 years old. The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is a lovely place to catch a show or concert when visiting town. This 300-seat theater frequently hosts national acts and theater productions. The Orbit Skate Center is a large indoor roller rink with smooth wood floors and groovy lighting. Nighttime brings loud music and fun events, and the adults-only lounge has its very own bar. Last but certainly not least, some people who visit Arlington Heights do so to visit Arlington Park and the Arlington International Racecourse. The world-famous racetrack is one of the most beautiful thoroughbred racing tracks in the US, where 20,000 onlookers can watch and bet on thrilling horse races.

Where to Park It

Just outside the Chicago metro area, you can find a variety of different campgrounds, as well as Walmart Supercenters to park for the night. There are also quite a few fueling stations to accommodate you and your Arlington Heights RV rental. Camp Reinberg has outdoor gear rentals, nature trails, wilderness programs and tours, and lots of camping sites open all year round.

Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort is a campground with amenities such as paddle boat rentals, a heated pool, an outdoor movie theater, sand volleyball, basketball hoops, hayrides, mini golf, and a gorgeous beach for lake swimming. Chicago Northwest KOA has plenty to satisfy campers; bike rentals are a nice feature for local exploration, and the in-ground pool and mini golf course don’t hurt either. Illinois Beach State Park has a cozy campground adjacent to Lake Michigan, where epic sunrises and sunsets prove to be the ultimate luxury.
