In the northern reaches of Illinois, roughly between Rockford and Chicago, is where you will find Crystal Lake. This lake is a wonderful place to check out when you book an RV in McHenry County and is located directly north of Elgin. The City of Crystal Lake surrounds the lake itself and originated as two separate communities in the 1800s. Crystal Lake, which is what drew the original settlers to the area, has since become an important community staple and tourist attraction.

Crystal Lake’s water covers approximately 220 acres and reaches just over 40 feet deep at its deepest point. The lake is popular with summer swimmers and boaters, anglers during all seasons of the year, and folks that camp in an RV near Crystal Lake. Because Crystal Lake isn’t too far from Chicago, it makes it easy to see the big city without having to pay big-city hotel prices.

Getting Outdoors

Spending time outdoors in northern Illinois is a wonderful summer, fall, and springtime activity. When visiting during the cold months of winter, you’ll definitely want to find some indoor activities to keep you busy. In the warm months, though, hiking is a very popular activity near Crystal Lake. The lake in the Hilly Fen Conservation Area is just south of the lake and provides ample opportunities for hiking on a variety of trail difficulties.

Two different beaches that service Crystal Lake, one on the southwestern side and one on the eastern side. These beaches are open to the public and are a fantastic way to spend the day at the lake when you are camping with an RV in the area. Be sure to bring sunscreen and drink plenty of water when spending the whole day at the beach, though, so that you don’t ruin your trip with a sunburn.

Anglers spend a lot of time at Crystal Lake, and you are more than welcome to join them while in town. Since the lake is well maintained by the city, there are almost always healthy fish to be caught. Common varieties of fish in the lake include white crappie, yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike, channel catfish, bluegill, and more. Make sure you have your fishing licenses up to date before fishing, though, so that you don’t run into any snags in your motorhome camping vacation.

Campers that stay here will have access to wifi, propane sales, mini-golf, firewood, bike rentals, a dog park, a cell phone charging area, a frisbee golf course, and more. There is also an onsite laundry room, showers, bathrooms, a pool during the warm months, and even a wireless printer for your convenience.

Exploring the Area

RV camping near Crystal Lake will give you unbridled access to everything this quaint Chicago-area city has to offer. One attraction that you’ll want to check out is the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park. Chicago is one of the biggest cities in the United States and absolutely has something to offer to everyone.

When you aren’t up for a trip into the Windy City but still want to be entertained, head north of Crystal Lake to the city of Woodstock.
