Palatine is a village in Cook County and a suburb of Chicago, IL. It has grown rapidly since the 1970s, a direct result of Chicago's growth, but still retains a friendly, small-town feel. Palatine has a reasonable racial diversity, with immigrants from Asia, the Pacific Islands and Latin America. A Sikh gurdwara (a temple or place of prayer) attracts people of the Sikh faith from all over America.

The Chicago Northwest Suburban Chinese School (CNSCS) was opened in 1981 by local parents (presumably Chinese) and by 2011 had 200 students. The school teaches students from preschool to grade 10 and offers extra-curricular classes to children and adults on evenings and weekends.

Celebrities who grew up in or moved to Palatine are numerous, and many of them are professional athletes. Todd Hundley was a catcher with the Mets, Cubs and Dodgers; Michael Bradley, a midfielder with Toronto FC; Liz Johnson, a professional bowler; David Saunders (wide receiver/linebacker), Jim Schwantz (linebacker) and Scott Tolzien (quarterback), professional football players. John Gegenhuber, Vicki Gunvalson and Christina Moore are all professional actors; and last but not least, guitarist/singer Ted Nugent, who needs no introduction.

RV rentals in Palatine are where your introduction to the charm and atmosphere of Palatine begins, and you can't experience this holed up in a hotel. Nearby interesting towns and cities are Evanston, Waukegan, Wheaton, Elgin and Crystal Lake.

Discover Palatine

The Great Outdoors

Three fairly large forest preserves worth checking out are Spring Lake Forest Preserve, west of Palatine; Arthur L Janura Forest Preserve (southwest); and Ned Brown Preserve (or Busse Woods, south). All are close and easily accessed. Spring Lake has a variety of landscapes, grasslands, wetlands, woodlands and savannas, which have rugged trails for hiking or horseback riding. The landscapes alternate between flat and rolling hills, and in winter are used for cross country skiing. The north section of the preserve is designated by the Audubon Society as an important bird area; bird watchers can glimpse bobolinks, which migrate from Argentina's grasslands in June. Fishing is not allowed in Spring Lake.

Cycling enthusiasts should try Arthur L. Janura Forest Preserve. It has paved and unpaved trails for walking, hiking and biking, and wildlife viewing. There are park benches at regular intervals (roughly a mile apart) where slow walkers can relax. Deer are easy to spot here, especially in the morning. November is rut season for the bucks; if you see antlers, you are probably ok but should still use caution. Park your Palatine rental motorhome nearby and enjoy a tasty home-cooked lunch while enjoying the magnificent views.

Golfers have their choice of courses near Palatine. Non-golfers can watch from your Palatine rental RV when you hit that hole-in-one.

Swimmers can head for Lake Michigan, which has plenty of beaches available. Gibson Park has beach access and swimming along with other park amenities. Langdon Park, north of Gibson, is a smaller beach, and is close to food outlets and a Starbucks. Langdon charges a fee to non-resident users; inflatable devices, such as inner tubes, are not allowed.

RV Parks

Paul Wolff Campground, near Elgin, has paved sites. It is open from May to October, and has wireless internet, picnic tables, 20/30/50 amp service, water, electricity and (there is no sewer hookup in each site but it has dump stations). It is close to a Metra Rail station which will take you to downtown Chicago.

Also near Elgin is Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, which has sites with full hookups (water, electricity & sewer), 20/30/50 amp service, wireless internet and picnic tables, laundry facilities and a playground. Some sites are pull through and big rig friendly; it is also pet-friendly.

Chicago Northwest KOA is also close by and has pull-through RV sites with 20/30/50 amp service, wireless internet, full hookups, laundry facilities, mini golf, frisbee golf, a swimming pool, walking trails and more. Guests can buy firewood and propane, and rent bicycles.

When you rent an RV, leave it at any of these sites, or others, while you journey into the city with peace of mind, knowing that your Palatine camper rental is completely safe.

Exploring The City

Chicago natives like to brag about their winters and how easily they handle them, so Chicago (and by extension, all of Illinois including Palatine) is the place to be if you want to test your winter skills. Ice fishing is a good place to start. Ice fishing tours are available, sometimes with award-winning anglers, and usually include a tent or shelter to keep the cold from getting unreasonable; having your Palatine RV rental nearby to warm up certainly wouldn't hurt, either.

If you are in Palatine in the summer and want to chill out literally rather than figuratively, try the Orbit Skate Center. It is family oriented, with ice skating lessons on Saturdays, an arcade center and a food court.

Arlington Park is where you'll find the horses but these aren't for riding or petting, unless you're the jockey. There is a concession for food and drinks. Some of the betting windows are now computerized; you can download their app and place bets from your phone without leaving your seat.

Chicago is a haven for foodies and Palatine, a Chicago suburb, does not disappoint. Palatine has everything under the sun, both for cuisine and cost, but two things you must try are the prime rib and the hot dogs. There are breakfast-only eateries at your disposal, pub-house restaurants and cafes serving desserts, plus family restaurants and more.
