The small town of Oglesby is located right off of Interstate 80, just two and a half hours south of Milwaukee in the northern portion of Illinois. With Chicago and Rockford being less than two hours away, this town is easily accessible for outdoor enthusiasts and RV campers looking to explore Starved Rock State Park.
The origin of the park’s name came from a bloody legend involving a battle between the Illiniwek and Potawatomi tribes back in the 1760s. Nearly 200 years later, in 1966, Starved Rock State Park was labeled a historic landmark and has been protected as such ever since. The park is now known for its environmental integrity. Oglesby has kept the area as unaffected by humans as possible, while still allowing them to enjoy it.
The beautiful Illinois River flows right through the park’s 2,600 acres and has created a haven for tall trees, luscious green plants, and awe-inspiring animals. Explore the deep canyons and glacially carved gorges. Bring your camera to capture the glory of the park’s spectacular waterfalls.
Hikers, prepare for a treat. Hike any of Starved Rock State Park’s many trails and you’re sure to find precious wildlife, colorful flowers, and eye-catching natural landscapes. Book an RV in LaSalle County and start experiencing the sights at Starved Rock!
Once you get your RV rental set up at one of the park’s many campsites, strap on your hiking boots and hit the paths. Starved Rock State Park features 18 canyons and 13 miles of trails. Wherever you end up, you’re bound to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitats. Watch frolicking white-tailed deer, curious gophers, turtles, and more! Like to birdwatch? Keep your eyes peeled for the local winged friends, like herons, eagles, bitterns, and woodpeckers.
Along your walks, you might need a place to rest. Why not have a bit of lunch near a sparkling waterfall? Of the park’s 18 canyons, falls can be found at 14 of them. LaSalle County campers who come during the winter months get to see these sights take on new lives as frozen icefalls!
The Illinois River isn’t hard to find, and it’s the perfect place to launch your boat. If you’re an angler, you’ll have no trouble finding a nice spot along the river to drop your line. If the urge to swim strikes you, the park advises against doing so in the Illinois River. There’s a strong undercurrent that’s deemed unsafe. But don’t fret! You can use the local swimming pool in LaSalle.
