Recommended RV Campgrounds and Attractions around Merrillville, IN
Are you interested in visiting Naperville, Illinois, in your RV? If so, a great RV park is situated just 21 miles out of Naperville. It's called Leisure Lake Membership Resort and you do need to be a member of the Good Sam RV Club to stay, but it's easy to join and you get loads of special offers and discounts. The resort is owned and operated by members of the Good Sam Club, and the amenities are great. There are 265 sites, 210 with full hookup, clean bathrooms and showers, and laundry facilities. Each site has a small concrete patio with a picnic table. There is so much to do here that you don't have to leave the resort to have a good time. There is a 24-acre stocked fishing lake, a two acre sand bottom swimming lake, a swimming pool, a store, a recreation room with such things as billiards, air hockey and satellite TV, and an exercise room. Your kids will love the playgrounds and mini-golf, while you might want to take a boat out on the lake. There's also horseshoe pits and volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts. When you visit Naperville, make sure you do the Riverwalk, which has small parks along the route, as well as bridges, sculptures, and fountains.
For the true urban experience, including parking in the shadow of a bustling convention center in one of America?s biggest and busiest cities, visit the McCormick Place Marshalling Yard. This location is less than 15 miles from the heart of Berwyn, and is every bit as stark as it sounds. While visiting in your RV rental from Chicago, there are few amenities that are available, and is little more than a parking lot also used by buses and industrial trucks. However, it?s worth it to be able to park your RV rental in the heart of Chicago, literally on the doorstep of the McCormick Convention Center, only steps away from attractions like the Arie Crown Theater and McCormick Bird Sanctuary, and just down the road from Soldier Field. The Lakefront Trail, a multi-use recreational route used by both commuters and travelers, is accessible just by crossing the street. The elevated train or "El" as it is know to locals, also has a stop at the convention center, which gives you access to virtually the whole metropolitan area. Regardless of events taking place in the center, the parking lot is always open, and under 24 hour security. Bring your RV rental while visiting Chicago. Chicago is a fantastic city!
When in Joliet, Illinois, it?s easy to be taken in by the abundance of places that allow petrolheads to let loose and get in as much of muscle cars and speeding as they possibly can, however, Joliet has another gem up her sleeve. The Rialto Square Theatre provides more than just arias and operas, as the productions are aimed at getting the whole family a glimpse at the wonders of the performing arts. Those who intend on staying in Joliet for a while may want to consider signing up for the membership program, which allows guests access to star treatment and a whole host of goodies and special events. The theatre is known to put on performances such as The Wizard of Oz, Teddy Bear Tea, The Sound of Music Interactive, and more. The theatre is also the ideal venue for those who wish to host a special event while in town.
At Wonder Works Children's Museum, children have the opportunity to participate in dozens of different hands-on activities, including painting, building, acting and much more. Encourage your child to expand their imagination, develop creativity and interact with others in a safe, exciting setting.
Stay in an RV park with the spirit of the big city at Green Fields Campground, which is also conveniently located within reach of the great outdoors. Just 40 miles southwest of Cicero, this is the ideal place to park your rig if you?re planning on visiting the Chicagoland Speedway, which hosts popular events like the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The campground offers a shuttle service for guests who are interested in seeing the races. The Waterfall Glen County Forest Preserve and Des Plaines Dolomite Prairies Land and Water Reserve are both less than a half-hour drive away when you?re in the mood for more peaceful, verdant settings. Most RV sites are equipped with electrical hookups, and there?s also a dumping station available. Extra amenities on the site for NASCAR weekends include porta-potties and extra sinks in addition to the permanent bathrooms and showers that are already available, along with a food delivery service. Ice and water (both drinkable and for vehicles) is also free for guests.

If you are planning to explore Des Plaines in Illinois, the Blackwell Family Campground is the best and most convenient place to stay. It is in Wheaton, Illinois, and is just 20 miles away from Des Plaines. It is located in Blackwell Forest Preserve, a beautiful area with woods and a 62-acre lake called Silver Lake. You get electric hookup here, nice restrooms and showers, and a fire range and picnic table at each site. All of the 64 sites have shade and privacy. While staying here, you get the opportunity to use the forest's facilities. There are more than six miles of turf and limestone trails where you can hike, bike, ride a horse, and in the winter, cross-country ski. The trail around the McKee Marsh Area has two observational decks, from where you can watch birds and other wildlife. You can bring your own boat to the lake, as long as it's under 20 feet, or you can rent a rowboat, canoe, or kayak. If you enjoy fishing, you can take part in your favorite sport here on the lake. Bluegill, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and rainbow trout can be caught. There are also two ponds where you can fish as well. In addition, there are plenty of picnic sites. The one downside to this campground is that it's only open on weekends, except for holiday weeks when it's open for the entire week.
