This converted 15 passenger Ford Econoline van is beautifully built into a camper van using precious Koa wood from the island. This van was my home for the first year living in Hawaii, so I've set it up to be efficient and comfortable. She is fully insulated and has a 14-in vent fan / ceiling fan right above the bed that keeps you cool all night long.
Many camper vans that you see you get a kitchen in a box and have to set up the kitchen if you want to make some food. This one is always set up and ready to go. The bed folds up into a couch but is quick to turn into a bed and the mattress is extremely comfortable.
It's the best way to make the most of your time in Hawaii. Where ever you go you are always home, the scenery just changes. The bed is a full size 6" memory foam mattress with a bamboo cover. It's brand new and super comfortable! Mosquito netting to encompass the entire sleeping area if you want to sleep with the doors open. The bed folds up to a couch for more room during the day for more comfort while cooking.
The kitchen has a two burner propane camp stove and has a new full set of pots and pans. 7 gallon water dispenser, French press and coffee mugs. Electric refrigerator/freezer is powered by the 200W solar system.
Porta potty for both men and women.
10 gallon solar outdoor shower gives the perfect temperature shower while the sun is still out.
Medical kit with basic medical supplies, sunburn lotion, and hydrogen peroxide.
Options / add-ons beginner surfboard, boogie boards and fins, snorkeling gear, trecking poles, back pack, beach chairs and umbrella, beach mats, grill, head lamps for lava tubes, umbrella, and rain ponchos.
Come join me on my Cal29 sailboat for whale watching, sunset / star gazing, snorkeling or spearfishing experience. $100 / person.
What's includedTwo full sets of snorkeling gear, trekking poles, backpack, headlamps for lava tubes, 1 surfboard, two boogie boards, fresh linens, beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, regular umbrella, outdoor shower. Pots and pans, dishes, French press and coffee mugs. RecommendationsTour the island! Go to South point and cliff jump or snorkeling. The stars at night down there are Amazing!!!
Head to Pahoa for Sunday nude beach and drum circles. Volcano national park to see the volcano. Visit Kamana Caves near Hilo where you can hike for hours into the earth down a lava tube. Visit the botanical gardens just north of Hilo. See Akaka falls, Kolekole beach park. Hike Waipio Valley. Visit the cute little town of Hawi at the northern tip of the island. Kapaa State park is a great place to camp, snorkel and whale watch during the winter months. Mahukona is an old harbor that has excellent snorkeling and a huge anchor just out from shore. Be careful of strong currents here though. Tons of beautiful reef fish. Next stop is Puako another good place to camp and snorkel. I have a map in the van on the counter that shows all this and much much more.
Other things to noteBe respectful of locals and the land. Drive the speed limit, they are not tolerant of speeding and the drivers here are the worst I've ever experienced. Definitely be a defensive driver. You will definitely see people veer to the right hand side of the road to make a left turn, making it impossible to pass them on the right. This is extremely common and traffic on a two-lane highway will come to a halt for someone making a left hand turn across traffic. Occasionally you will come across a one lane bridge the triangles on the pavement on your side of the bridge means that you are supposed to yield to any on coming traffic.
Just because somebody stops and gives you the right of way doesn't mean that it's safe, make sure you look for other traffic before proceeding.
No smoking in the vehicle.
If fuel isn't filled when returned, there's a $25 fee charge + the amount of the fuel.

After building my first camper van (Kozy Koa) and living in that while traveling around the island for about 8 months I decided I loved the freedom of living the van life, but I needed to be able to stand up in my van. So I bought a Mercedes Sprinter van that I now live in full time and started renting out Kozy Koa. I loved hearing the stories from my renters about how they loved the van and how much of the island they were able to see. I decided to build another van and we now have added Lil Honu which was designed as a rental so it has some really nice upgrades. I am currently building another van which should be available by November. At least that's the goal. It will have all of the upgrades that Lil Honu has and then some. She's called Da Dolphin.

Dug’s van was my little home on the island for the week :) He thought of every detail to make it comfortable. Loved the wood detailing and having a good sized refrigerator. Having two fans was also clutch.

Absolutely incredible. All the small details were thought out. Very functional. Very drivable. I paralleled parked the van, and my wife said, "color me impressed." I almost took offense, because of course I could park it.

This was the best way to see the big island of Hawaii. We saw nearly the entire island, and spent the night on beautiful parks by the ocean. It made the experience more memorable and the van was GREAT!! Highly recommend. Dug was communicable and excellent at suggestions and knowledgeable about the island.

Our trip was AWESOME!! When we decided we wanted to visit the Big Island our goal was to see and do as much as possible. We love hiking, but with the island as big as it is, we decided on van life, which was the best decision we made! The convenience & freedom of being able to hike as much as we wanted and then camp and start again in the morning was such an adventure in many awesome ways!! I loved all the flexibility we had living this life style. And Dug was AWESOME too, always available when we had questions! We ended up hiking 182 miles and found so many treasures all along the way! Some of our trip high lights were hiking to the summit of Mauna Kea, night snorkel with Manta Rays, state parks, endless lava hikes (all over the island), Tropical Botanical Gardens/ 4 mile Scenic Drive, kayaking and snorkeling Kealakekua Bay (we were surrounded by hundreds of dolphins), sunset by the Mauna Kea visitor center, HUGE waves on south shores, endless rainbows near Hilo, & night hikes at Volcano National Park. We saw so many turtles in unexpected places and even a Hawaiian monk seal and had so many beaches all to ourselves! Thanks Dug for everything, truly the trip of a lifetime! :) :)
