Due to the lake's size, this area is a popular spot for water sports, and activities include kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Anglers will enjoy this lake, and common catches include trout, chain pickerel, and bass. There's a long swimming beach open to the public, where you can enjoy a dip in the lake or sunbathe and take in your surroundings.Steep Falls campers might consider visiting one of the mountains in the local vicinity. Bradbury Mountain State Park is perfect for anybody looking for panoramic views of Casco Bay and the surrounding forests. There are over 20 miles of trails that will take you through the woods and up Bradbury Mountain. If you're a nature watcher, you may enjoy seeing the annual hawk migration in the spring, where over 1,000 hawks flock to the mountain. The southern area of Maine is relatively quiet, with not too many big cities. If you're looking to learn about Maine, you should visit Portland, one of Maine's largest settlements. Portland has some great cultural activities, including the Portland Museum of Art. This gallery focuses mainly on local artists; however, there is art by internationally renowned artists, including the likes of Andy Warhol and Claude Monet. There are famous local artists at the museum too, including well-known artists Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. If you've visited any of the lighthouses around Portland, you may recognize some of them in Hopper's work.If you're looking to experience some of Portland's history, consider a visit to the Portland Observatory. This building is a notable attraction due to it being the oldest standing wooden signal tower in the United States. The tower was built in 1807 and is oozing with history. Palace Playland is a theme park near Portland and is unique as it is billed as being New England's only beachfront amusement park.
