Located next to the state park, this trail involves rock scaling with awesome wildlife watching opportunities and stunning 360 degrees views from the Mount Beacon Fire Tower. Since the trail passes through cliffs, be cautious, especially if hiking with small children.

Hunting is a big thing at Hudson Highlands State Park during specific seasons, so don’t leave your shotgun or bow behind. As you go about hunting at Bannerman Island, some of the animals to keep an eye out for include deer and spring turkey. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to obtain a New York State hunting license and a park hunting permit from the park’s office.

Some of the amenities include a fire ring at each site, a picnic table, and a barbeque grill. Pets are allowed on all sites, as long as they’re on a leash of not more than 10 feet. For recreation, summer campers enjoy boating, hunting, and hiking. When you choose to camp in an RV near Carmel during winter, Cross-country skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling is the way to go.

An alternative for camping could be the New York City North/ Newburgh KOA, especially if you’re looking forward to camping in a serene campground with full hookups near New York City. The family-friendly ample-sized lots provide stable WiFi, laundry facilities, and propane. While camping with an RV here, you’ll enjoy loads of recreation facilities, including rock climbing walls, basketball courts, and an arcade. Additional opportunities include bike rentals and a sightseeing tour of the Big Apple that runs from May through October, with stops at the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Times Square. When you’re interested in the sightseeing tour, be sure to make early reservations.

Exploring the Area

After a couple of days of Hudson Highlands State Park camping, spare a few days and tour the neighboring tourist attractions in New York City. Start the day by taking a ferry trip from Battery Park to Liberty Island with stunning views of New York’s Harbor, Ellis Island, and the historic Statue of Liberty National Monument. While at the Liberty Island, don’t miss a guided tour at the base of the statue and a chance to climb up the crown. Barely a stone throws' away, you will find Rockefeller Center with an observatory deck.

Bring a camera as you’ll get amazing overviews of the massive Central Park and the Empire State Building. If time allows, take a stroll around the sparkling Times Square. Don’t drive off your campervan without touring the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both museums display art exhibits, some dating back to the 18th century. When hunger comes calling, Manhattan is littered with eateries, serving everything from hamburger to eggplant parmesan.

After having a hearty lunch, take a short drive to Central Park, one of the world’s largest urban parks. Containing attractions such as the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, Wollman Rink, and the Central Park Zoo, the local gem is one of the best places to spend an afternoon with family. Be sure to pass by The Dairy Visitor Center and Gift Shop for a couple of souvenirs. The gift shop is the oldest building in Central Park.
