With over 7,000 acres of fascinating, diverse landscape, Hanging Rock State Park is one of North Carolina's natural wonders. While exploring the park, you'll find interesting geological history, waterfalls, lakes, roughly 20 miles of hiking trails, and nearly 700 species of plants and animals. Wildlife spotters can keep an eye out for gray foxes, owls, and rare salamanders. RV campers who come here for the wildflowers will love the displays of mountain laurel, pink lady’s slipper, and rhododendron.

Hanging Rock State Park is located in central North Carolina, two hours north of Charlotte. It’s nestled in the Sauratown Mountains, an impressively small range that rises 2,000 feet over the surrounding countryside. The area was first home to the Saura tribe, and the modern park started as a Civilian Conservation Corps project in the 1930s. The heavily forested park has expanded throughout the years, and the local community has been greatly invested in improving the park for your visit. Getting Outdoors

Hanging Rock State Park is beautiful year-round, but there are certainly more summer activities than winter activities. Water sports are one popular activity at Hanging Rock State Park. During those hot summer months, the 12-acre lake is a welcome spot to cool down and contains diving platforms and a historic bathhouse from the 1930s. You can also rent a canoe for paddling on Hanging Rock State Park Lake; private watercraft are not allowed. You can, however, bring your own non-motorized watercraft for navigating the Dan River, a popular tubing waterway. Canoes, kayaks, and tubes are also available for rent from nearby outfitters.

Hanging Rock State Park also has some great trails. Bring your mountain bike to explore the park’s nine miles of exhilarating singletrack. Hikers have no shortage of options, with almost 20 miles of trails that follow ridgelines with spectacular views, take you to waterfalls and cascades, a mountain cave, and stands of colorful flowers. The trails consist of everything from an easy half-mile nature walk to more challenging six-mile hikes. There’s one wheelchair-accessible trail leading to a beautiful overlook. Knowledgeable rangers lead nature walks on these trails throughout the summer.

With a little planning, rock climbers will find a challenge climbing the park's 400-foot cliff walls, where there are no established routes or anchors. Just be sure to get a permit from the park first. And if you hold a North Carolina fishing license, you can cast your line in the lake or the Dan River, catching bass, sunfish, and catfish. There’s also one wheelchair-accessible fishing pier on the lake.

Camping at Hanging Rock State Park

Hanging Rock State Park campground is open year-round and can accommodate your rental RV. There are 73 sites at Hanging Rock, including one wheelchair-accessible site. All RV sites at Hanging Rock State Park campground are back-in sites with a maximum length of 60 feet. The sites are located in the park’s thick forest, granting campers both shade and privacy.

Exploring the Area

The area surrounding Hanging Rock State Park also has plenty of great attractions worth your time. Pilot Mountain State Park, 45 minutes west of the park, is also a part of the same mountain range and features a natural landmark that voyagers have used for navigation for centuries. The historic pre-Revolution settlement of Old Salem lies 45 minutes to the south and features numerous living history exhibits.
