Discover Kernersville, NC

Kernersville is a small town in Forsyth County, North Carolina. A small part of the town's 17.4 square miles is located in Guildford County, making it the perfect size for exploring on foot. Kernersville was originally named “Dobson's Crossroads” (after property owner William Dobson), with a single hotel, Dobson's Tavern, that served breakfast to George Washington in 1791. In 1817, the hotel and property were purchased by Joseph Kerner and it became known as “Kerner's Crossroads”. In 1873, after the railroad had arrived, the town was incorporated as “Kernersville”.

Although farming has been an important industry, some rural farmland was reclaimed in the late 20th and 21st centuries by the town for housing development. Numerous shopping centers have been built and the town has invested heavily in construction and development of the downtown area, including widening Main Street and adding curb parking, rebuilding and stocking Century Lake Park’s waters, and more. Despite this, agriculture in Kernersville continues to thrive and support the local economy. Your Kernersville travel trailer rental is a perfect opportunity to throw together a home-cooked meal using ingredients grown locally and purchased straight off of the farm.

Kernersville has several claims to fame. It was visited by George Bush in 2005 and by Bill Clinton in 2008. Former professional basketball player Turner Battle is from Kernersville, and it was home to NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick from 2001 to 2007. Harvick's father-in-law, John Linville, is from Kernersville and is a professional Nationwide Series driver. In 1998, the Minnesota Twins considered moving to Kernersville but that plan was never realized. Book an RV in Forsyth County and you are on your way to seeing and exploring this small corner of America. Other notable cities within reach of Kernersville are Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, Thomasville, and Lexington, and your Kernersville luxury RV rental is the perfect vehicle to see them in.

The Great Outdoors

Hanging Rock State Park is 30 miles north and slightly west. It was created in the 1930s in the Sauratown Mountain range and offers a variety of activities and experiences. Its 20 miles of hiking trails lead to waterfalls and spectacular countryside views, and it has another 8.4 miles of mountain biking trails. Guests can go rock climbing but a permit is required. Visitors can go paddling on the Dan River, or swimming in a lake surrounded by hills and hardwood forests that extend down to the lakeshore. This 12-acre lake allows canoeing and is stocked for fishing. An on-site bathhouse provides restrooms and changing rooms, a snack bar, and a lounge with scenic lake views. Camping at Hanging Rock in your Kernersville RV trailer rental is possible but there are only basic amenities.

Pilot Mountain State Park is west of Hanging Rock and is an important recreational landmark to the area. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on specific parts of Pilot Mountain's steep cliffs, which rise vertically more than 2,000 feet. The mountain is connected to the Yadkin River by a 6.5-mile trail, part of a complex system of trails that traverse the park, and there is an equestrian trail, although horses are not available for rent (at least within the park).

RV Parks

There aren't many RV parks within or next to Kernersville, but there are some within 25 miles of the city.

Tanglewood RV Campground is 20 miles southwest and has RV sites with full hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electricity), Wi-Fi, and paved pads. The site is on a hill, so leveling your RV could be a challenge. There is one pull-through site, the rest are back in, but the campground is big rig friendly. Sites are shaded and there is a swimming pool, a paved trail for hiking and walking your dog, a separate dog park, restrooms and showers, a playground, canoeing on the Yadkin River (which is nearby), and more.

Oak Hollow Campground has sites with full hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electricity), Wi-Fi, and gravel pads for larger RVs. Some areas have trees for shade and the sites can be a bit sloped in certain parts of the campground. The campground has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a convenience store, pet area and playground, tennis courts, and access to a lake where picnic tables are available. There is an on-site golf course and guests can rent boats or canoes, and go fishing in the lake.

Exploring The City

Within the city, start with Fourth of July Park, the epicenter for most local events. Activities are held throughout the year, such as the Honeybee Festival, a number of short marathon (5K) events, and, obviously, Fourth of July fireworks. The park is wheelchair accessible and has hiking trails (maps are available), basketball, pickleball and tennis courts, an inline skating and skateboarding skate area, a playground with swings and slides, and three sheltered picnic areas with tables and outdoor grills. Park your Kernersville RV rental nearby for some relaxation between or after your activities.

Kernersville has a botanical garden, a mountain biking park, indoor skating rink and a historical museum (including displays of trains and related items). The local farmers market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from May to October.

Kernersville has a good selection of restaurants, such as American, Southern, Mexican, Italian, Greek and Chinese, and pizzerias to top it off. Prices range from cheap to moderately priced, so a family dinner out is unlikely to break the bank. Burger joints, bistros, steakhouses and seafood venues, frozen yogurt and donut outlets (for a pre-dinner snack) and pub restaurants round out the list. Or, take some groceries back to your motorhome rental in Kernersville to whip up a good home-cooked meal. Whatever you need, you will find it here.
