Tucked away in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the northwestern corner of North Carolina is the fascinating community of Marshall. This unique town was once referred to as Lapland but later changed its name to honor Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Marshall for many years was a crucial stop along the Buncombe Turnpike which connected the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina to the settlements of Tennessee.

When you book an RV in Marshall, you’ll see that this tiny town on the French Broad River exudes charm. Despite its low population, it serves as the county seat of Madison County, making it the home to several antiquated government buildings that can all be found on the National Register of Historic Places. With incredible mountains and forests surrounding the city on all sides, and a rich Appalachian heritage of mountain music and country crafts, there is hardly anywhere better to experience this lost culture that is older than the United States. Asheville is only a short drive to the south in your Marshall camper rental so everything you need is within the area.

Explore the Outdoors

Western North Carolina is among some of the most gorgeous places in the entire world, and one of the wettest too. The area is full of temperate rainforests making it one of the most diverse ecosystems found anywhere. You can essentially drive your Marshall RV rental in any direction and stumble on some pretty fantastic forests or parks so don’t be afraid to do some exploring of your own. Chimney Rock State Park is found southeast of Asheville and is home to the eponymous Chimney Rock for which it is named. This massive granite monolith can be climbed or hiked by park visitors to obtain startling views of the scenery of the valley below. There is a bevy of nature trails in Chimney Rock State Park, some of which lead to exciting sites like the Gneiss Caves or the Hickory Nut Falls, a 400-foot waterfall that cascades down from atop the lofty cliffs.

Lake James State Park is not far and can be reached by taking Interstate 40 to the east from Asheville in your Marshall RV rental. This inviting park is located on the shores of Lake James, a large reservoir that is excellent for fishing, swimming, boating, and water skiing. The park is one of the largest lakefront parks in the state and has excellent beaches like Paddy’s Creek Swimming Beach, where you can enjoy a dip in the refreshing waters. There are three different campgrounds, miles of hiking and biking trails, and stunning views of the mountains across the lake, especially at sunset.

Lake James State Park is conjoined with Pisgah National Forest, one of the most gorgeous stretches of wilderness in the region. This popular outdoor recreation area has over a half million acres to explore, with thousands of acres of old growth, virgin forest to trek through. Biking, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and camping at this lovely forest are all options when you bring your Marshall motorhome rental to Pisgah National Forest.

Cherokee National Forest covers a large swath of land on both sides of the Tennessee-North Carolina state line, with 11 distinct wilderness areas in the Appalachian Mountains. Sections of the Appalachian Trail can be found in the park, making it a long-distance trekking hub for many of the country’s most devoted through-hikers. There are several lakes in the forest that are perfect for fishing and other recreational activities, and an assortment of different campgrounds that can accommodate you and your Marshall RV rental by owner.

City Sightseeing

When you rent an RV in Marshall, there are not a whole lot of attractions in this one-street town, as it is primarily an outdoors destination. Sure, there are lovely bars, quaint country restaurants, some meaderies for homemade craft honey wine, and some artsy studios and galleries, but most people are busy hiking in the gorgeous mountains and forests nearby when they come to town. There are several touring companies and white-water rafting businesses in town which also makes for an exciting time while in Marshall.

If you bring your Marshall RV rental near Asheville, you are bound to find some fun things to do.
