Getting Outdoors

Breathe in the fresh woodland air in Hocking Hills on any of the park’s seven hiking trails, each with its own unique draw. All of the trails are between a quarter-mile and two and a half miles in length. The trails vary in difficulty, which means the whole family can feel free to explore. Along the way, you’ll discover scenic views, tumbling waterfalls, ghostly legends, and glacially carved rock formations.

A few of the park’s trails are asphalt and wheelchair-accessible. Depending on the difficulty and location of the hike, pets are allowed as long as they’re well-behaved and on a leash. Refer to the park’s hiking guide to find out which trails are best for you and your pet.

Fancy a dip in the lake? RV campers in Hocking Hills have the beautiful Rose Lake at the ready. Swimming isn’t allowed in Rose Lake, but it’s an excellent place to go paddleboarding and kayaking. Is there an angler in the group? This 17-acre lake is the best spot around to catch rainbow trout, channel catfish, and bluegill.

Hocking Hills State Park campers with wild imaginations and an interest in the mysterious must venture out to Old Man’s Cave. At the end of the eponymous trail, hikers will find a flowing waterfall and the peculiar cave. Richard Rowe, the old man for whom the cave is named, was a hermit who lived in these caverns in the late 18th century. Around the same time, two brothers also lived in a cabin nearby, which has since been relocated. All three men are thought to be buried in or near Old Man’s Cave. Whether fact or fiction, this cave has attracted millions of visitors from across America to observe its gorgeous natural structures and revel in its exciting legends.
