The charming suburban city of Clackamas is just minutes to the south of Portland, Oregon. This tiny bedroom community is home to Camp Withycombe, a military base owned and operated by the US Army. The town of Clackamas is named for the Clackamas indigenous tribal people who lived and hunted on the lands around Portland and the rest of the surrounding Willamette Valley.

When visitors search for an RV in Clackamas, they do so for the surreal and majestic wilderness of Oregon; the balance between the national forests and parks of Oregon and the quaint city of Portland are perfect, ensuring that your vacation will be anything but boring. The TriMet bus lines and the MAX Light Rail offer service through Clackamas and enable tourists to visit Portland with ease when they rent an RV in Clackamas.

Its astoundingly good positioning just outside the metro area leaves you in prime position to slip out and visit the countryside and all of the sublime sights that accompany it. This forest oasis in the metro area is perfect for people who don’t feel like venturing out too far with a Clackamas rental motorhome.

Tryon Creek State Natural Area has lots of trails for horseback riding, biking, hiking, and jogging. Portland's 40-Mile Loop runs through Tryon Creek and is a popular trail for runners. The pleasant nature center near the park’s entrance enlightens and educates people of all ages with exhibits and guided nature tours. Oxbow Regional Park is great for camping in your Clackamas RV rental, and sits on the sparkling Sandy River. The river winds through the 1,000-acre park and creates a gorgeous atmosphere teeming with natural wildlife and strange plants.

Clatsop State Forest and Tillamook State Forest, out by the coastal town of Tillamook, have lots to offer with regards to nature. These gorgeous habitats are among the rainiest places in the United States. The Tillamook rainforest receives over 100 inches of rain each year, with the higher altitudes getting snow as well.

When you book a motorhome rental in Clackamas, Mount Hood dominates the horizon with its imposing grandeur. Mount Hood National Forest is home to this colossal stratovolcano and the 400,000 acres of old growth virgin forest surrounding it. Berry picking, mushroom hunting, hunting, fishing, wintertime skiing, and even snowshoeing are all popular activities at this epic forest. Willamette National Forest, down by Eugene, is not too far away and well worth a visit in your Clackamas luxury motorhome rental. Don’t miss out on spectacular Crater Lake National Park, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring an ancient volcano with a deep lake in its ruins.

City Attractions

It might sound disappointing at first, but Clackamas has no true attractions to speak of. The town itself is wonderful and charming, with lots of amazing eateries and boutiques lining the streets of the downtown section, but visitors are more likely to see attractions in the surrounding towns and cities when exploring the area with a Clackamas rental RV. Clackamas Town Center is a retail shopping complex in the middle of everything, with everything you could possibly think of wanting. The North Clackamas Aquatic Park is great for children; twirling water slides and splash pools highlight this indoor facility’s fun activities.

In Oregon City just a few miles away, there are a trio of fun attractions that many Oregon visitors feel the need to see. The Oregon City Municipal Elevator is a strange-looking observation deck and elevator that hovers above the town, providing unencumbered views of the land below. The Willamette Falls Riverwalk is the best place to gaze upon the Willamette Falls, which plummet 40 feet into turbulent rapids at the bottom. Lastly, the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is a fascinating place to learn about the first pioneers who trekked across the country in search for a better life.

Where to Park It

Oregon is so outdoors oriented that it is nearly impossible to go anywhere without seeing a handful of RV parks and campgrounds. Pheasant Ridge RV Resort has a heated indoor pool and hot tub for year-round use, as well as internet and cable TV. This centrally located park is not far from local golf courses, ski slopes, shopping centers, and restaurants. Riverside RV Park is another spot to consider, with its big rig-friendly camping spaces and a pond for fishing.

Roamer’s Rest RV Park is close to Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, and is a quick 30-minute drive from Portland and all of the city’s fine attractions. If you want to get closer to nature and farther from the city, Mount Hood National Forest has several peaceful campgrounds in the mountains.
