One of the first reservoirs in Pennsylvania to be created strictly for recreational use, rather than as water supply or irrigation for the farms, Lake Nockamixon was born in 1958. Although the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans are long gone, their influence on Pennsylvania lingers even to this day. The lake was originally intended to be named Tohickon Lake, in a nod to Tohickon Creek which feeds into it, but the powers that be changed it to Nockamixon, a Lenni-Lenape Native American word for “a place of soft soil.”

Pennsylvania’s Department of Forests and Water (now Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) purchased several acres of land around the lake with three goals in mind: to preserve the wilderness, to provide people with access to land-oriented recreational activities, and to preserve the remnants of historic Native American sites.

The closest large town is Quakertown, about ten miles to the west. The first step to creating your ideal vacation is with a search for an RV in Bucks County, PA, then head out to make memories with the family.

Getting Outdoors

Ringed by low, flat hills that are remnants of ancient mountains older than the Rocky Mountains, Lake Nockamixon glistens a serene blue. Tall, stately oak, maple, and birches crowd the shores, their vibrant green leaves reaching out to form a lush canopy overhead that filters light in dappled splotches. The forest floor is blanketed by ferns and mossy rocks, muffling footfalls of people as they wander through the trees.,

A warm-water fishery, Lake Nockamixon is classified as a Big-Bass Lake, and anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish like smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, and catfish. In addition to six boat launches, a marina, and a fishing dock, Pennsylvania’s DCNR lends out fishing rods for free and also rents out small non-powered boats like kayaks and canoes. Soft breezes blow at a steady clip, sending sailboats and catamarans gliding across the wide surface. Local sailboat and catamaran racing events are held throughout the year. Windsurfing along the shores is a popular activity as well.

Twice a year, DCNR releases the dam. In a great surge, millions of gallons of water gush forth, flowing down Tohickon Creek to join Delaware River. Whitewater rafting enthusiasts can experience the wild rapids, which sometimes can reach as high as Class IV. The event, weather permitting, usually occurs in November and March.

Pennsylvania is dotted by waterfalls, most low and wide, and Nockamixon is no exception. Dozens of multi-use trails meander through Nockamixon State Park, and one leads to a waterfall. Though it’s no Niagara Falls, it’s a photogenic one. Water from a babbling brook some 20 feet overhead tumbles over several granite ledges and boulders, eventually joining the lake.

A relatively popular lake, large mammals such as black bear and white-tailed deer are a rare sight, often glimpsed only fleetingly as they scurry or bound off. Sounds of birdsong are constant companions for hikers as they roam the woods. Turkeys and rabbits roam the open groves within these woods.

Although bow-hunting of small game is permitted, it is limited to a very short window in autumn and only in a certain area. A larger state game-land just a few short miles away has fewer restrictions on the bags and weaponry.

Camping at Lake Nockamixon

Skip the hotel scene and wake up to the sounds of birds and wind in the trees outside an RV rental. RV camping at Nockamixon State Park is unfortunately not feasible; however, there are several other options very close by.

Little Red Barn Campground is less than a mile away, and it offers partial hookups, wifi, and fire rings at each site fulfill the quintessential RV camping experience. The dog-friendly campground is set in picturesque woods, and most sites are shaded by towering trees.

Beaver Valley Family Campground near Erwinna, PA, may be another contender. Guests have the choice between setting up in an open space area or the woods. Although not as close to Lake Nockamixon, it’s close to several hiking trails.

Exploring the Area

As old as Philadelphia and New York, this area doesn’t get as much love as it should. Many historic homes, barns, and other structures from the 17th, 18th, and 19th century still stand today. Hop into a rental motorhome and explore the winding mountain roads and the vast farming valleys. Along the way, keep an eye out for orchards, wineries, and small farms. Many welcome visitors and eagerly will usher them on a tour of their grounds, proudly sharing the history of their endeavors.

A handful of covered bridges are carefully maintained by the locals to prolong their life in hopes that the next generation will have a chance to enjoy them. Two are in the area: one near Richlandtown, and the other by Riegelsville. One of the smallest suspension bridges in the United States can be found in Perkasie. Scarcely wide enough to function as a footpath, it crosses two small gurgling streams.

Lake Nockamixon has a little bit of something for everyone: outdoor adventures, landscape photography, historical expeditions, and education. Find your ideal adventure when you book a rental RV at Lake Nockamixon.
