I had a beautiful trip to the redwoods in California and then up to Crater Lake with Shackleton! Communication with Eleanor was excellent and prompt. I tacked on a last-minute extra day to the trip to avoid a heatwave in Portland and they dealt with the logistical piece of that really smoothly. The bed is extremely comfortable (not something I can say of other vans I’ve rented!) and I liked the alcohol stove a lot. Easier and less scary than propane can be. The truck itself is in very good shape, sealed well, drives easily, and doesn’t rattle. The only downsides are minor: though there’s a camp table you can pull from the back and set up, there’s no pull-out table in the living area, which I thought was an odd design choice but hardly the end of the world. I’d also say the van is interior is pretty scuffed up, much more on the functional side. That being said, knowing how hard these vans get used by renters, I can see the logic of not investing in a coat of paint or what have you! Overall a great experience.

This was our second time renting Shackleton. We spent our first night at a state park near Pendleton (Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area), then to a BLM area east of Ontario, OR that Evan and Eleanor told us about. We loved it and spent 3 nights there! Then we wanted a change so we spent the next night pulled off the road under the pines in Sisters, OR for 2 nights. For our last night we drove to the coast and got a great spot with a view and ate fresh cooked crab at Jetty Fishery Marina. It was a delightful week, and we are looking forward to renting Shackleton again. It is like a little cabin that can take you anywhere.

This is a well designed and very comfortable conversion that was done by a professional cabinet maker. It has been up and down the continent while the current owners lived in it for a year. As a result of their experience, they have thought of everything you will need to be comfortable and were very nice to rent from. I chose it for our November long weekend at the beach because it has a wood stove to stay warm (and an optional propane heater), and it was optimal for being enjoyable even when we would be stuck inside while it rained on the Sunday. On our trip we spent the non-rainy parts on the beach with our doodle, and when it was raining we either cozied up to the heat from the stove and watched downloaded Netflix off our laptop, or sat under the awning sipping hot cocoa.

We had a great time in Shackleton, The Van! Simple and tidy, it was easy to take the van where we wanted to go. We encountered some pretty big rain storms and it stayed warm and comfy and camp and was not difficult to drive in the rain and wind.
