The Great Outdoors

When you camp at Loyston Point Campground, you'll want to explore the adjacent Big Ridge State Park. This 3,500-acre state park consists of dense woodlands and three ridges that create beautiful valleys. There are over 15 miles of trails to explore, which lead along streams, through the forests, and along old roadways. During your hike, keep a lookout for local bird species, including herons, bald eagles, and kingfishers. The 49-acre Big Ridge Lake is perfect for watersports, and the lake has a sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming. Boating and fishing are also possible here, and anglers can expect to catch bream and bass in these waters.Another nearby state park worth visiting is Norris Dam State Park. This park is located at the far end of Norris Lake, with more than 800 miles of shoreline to explore. This massive lake is perfect for watersports, and there's a large marina next to the dam, which is great for docking a small boat. Fishing is another favorite pastime; however, swimming is prohibited in the lake. There is a swimming pool if you want to cool off. Several small trails ranging from half a mile to over four miles in length lead through the park's gorgeous valleys and along the edge of the lake.One of the most scenic parks in the area is Frozen Head State Park. This massive 24,000-acre park features verdant forests encompassing the 3,300-foot mountain. Hikers who are looking for a challenge will love exploring the rugged terrain at this park, which leads up the mountain, past stunning waterfalls, and through the woods. During your walk, keep an eye out for local bird species, including blue-gray gnatcatchers, Louisiana waterthrush, and yellow-throated warblers. The park also contains s small river called Flat Fork Creek, which is stocked with trout.

Exploring the City

Visitors will see some rare and endangered creatures during their visit, including red pandas, Malayan tigers, and southern white rhinos. The zoo even offers animal encounters where you can get up close and personal with some of nature's cutest critters.Alternatively, you might consider visiting one of Knoxville's exquisite museums. The Knoxville Museum of Art is a small museum mainly focused on art relating to Tennessee. It displays works by local artists, including Joseph Delaney and Bessie Harvey. This museum is an excellent place to learn about how local people perceive their surroundings. The museum also hosts temporary exhibits, so you'll see something new every time you visit.
