As made apparent by its name, College Station is home to not just any college, but one of the largest and most notable universities in all of Texas. This city is the location of Texas A&M University, and one of the most famous college towns in the country. Together with the neighboring city of Bryan, the combined metro area is one of the largest in Texas.
The city dates back to the 1860s when it was first settled and shortly after it was chosen as the ideal spot for an agricultural college to be established. With the arrival of the first railway in town at the turn of the century, College Station never looked back as the population would continually rise over the next century. This cultural oasis is one of the best-educated cities in the south and home to an excellent mass transit system making it easy to get around town when you rent an RV. This massive, manmade lake is about 30 miles outside the city to the south, and home to a few excellent lakefront parks you can choose from. The lake is great for swimming, boating, and fishing especially. Bastrop State Park is also found on the shores of a smaller lake over by Austin, welcoming visitors from all over Texas. Bastrop State Park is dotted with loblolly pines, juniper trees, and post oaks on either side of peaceful walking paths that connect to the nearby Buescher State Park. There are lots of interesting animals and beautiful flowers to see and photograph while you hike through the woods, and a large golf course and swimming pool too.
Fairfield Lake State Park is north of College Station and is another lake where you can relax. There are wonderful nature programs for people of all ages offered at the park to inform and cultivate a love for the great outdoors. Kyle Field is a massive stadium home to the Texas A&M football team. On game days in the fall, the parking lot is a wild party with over 100,000 people tailgating and waiting to pack the stadium in support of their team.
If you enjoy shopping, Post Oak Mall is the go-to destination in town with hundreds of shops, stores, restaurants, and bars. The downtown areas are full of trendy boutiques, cafes, and breweries as well to cater to university students and their visiting families.
The Museum of the American GI does everything in its power to preserve the honor of the American military, with uniforms, weapons, and armored vehicles organized into exciting exhibits. You can learn about all the armed conflicts in the nation’s history and the incredible people that paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the country they love. The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located in College Station, containing thousands of documents, papers, academic writings, and biographies about the president. There are even replica Oval Office and Camp David office rooms at the museum, and a chunk of the Berlin Wall to create a collage of the early '90s when Bush was President.
