Discover Georgetown, TX

They say that in the 1970s, people came to Austin when they didn’t have jobs. Today, most people relocate to Austin because they have jobs. That reversal has fueled tremendous growth, especially on the north side. Places like Pflugerville, Round Rock, and Georgetown that were sleepy small towns as late as the early 1990s are now bustling suburbs. The Hill Country soul of these communities is still there. But, you may need to book an RV in Georgetown to find it.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Until fairly recently, visitors and locals alike derided the Inner Space Cavern as “a hole in the ground with a souvenir shop on top.” That was then, and this is now. Recent expansions have uncovered treasures far beyond those that a road crew stumbled upon in the early 1960s. There are three vast, cathedral-sized levels which begin some 50 feet below ground. The tour guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. That combination greatly enhances your visit to an already special place. Scientists believe the caves are about 100 million years old.

Jim Hogg Park is on the north shore of Lake Georgetown. Boating and fishing, especially for smallmouth bass, are the most popular activities at the park. There’s also the 26-mile San Gabriel Trail, which wraps around the lake through many dense forested areas. If you’re a hunter, you’ll find lots of deer, rabbits, and waterfowl in your sites. Jim Hogg Park also has over 140 campsites, many of which are RV friendly. So, if you’re looking for a weekend excursion in your Georgetown rental RV, Lake Georgetown may be the ideal spot.

Cedar Breaks Park is on the opposite side of Lake Georgetown. That should give you some idea about how big this lake is. The park features a very nice boat ramp and fishing pier. You can also choose one of the 64 RV campsites for your Georgetown motorhome rental. Facilities include hot showers and restrooms, along with dozens of well-marked hiking trails.

Blue Hole Park is located in the bluffs overlooking the South San Gabriel River. Visitors enjoy wading, swimming, fishing, and sightseeing. Perhaps best of all, this nature park is just five blocks away from the town square, and Austin is just a short drive down Interstate 35.

City Attractions

Since we’ve transitioned to city events, we’ll start with the Williamson County Courthouse. Back in the day, the courthouse square was a community gathering place. In this slice of Central Texas, that’s still the case. The Courthouse itself is one of the most picturesque ones in Texas. When you start with limestone, it’s hard to go wrong. There are also events aplenty, such as concerts and street festivals. The historic Georgetown Palace Theater is downtown as well. The recently-restored theater is a wonderful place to see a musical or play featuring talented local artists. The seating is cozy but not cramped, a fact which greatly enhances the experience. During your downtown tour, don’t overlook the Williamson Museum. There are a number of rotating exhibits that help your family understand more about the people who have lived here over the centuries.

What’s Unique

If you’ve read this far, you’ve discovered that Georgetown is a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Other area towns, like San Marcos on the south side of Austin, have a similar feel. But none quite have the vibe that Georgetown has. It’s a spirit that’s almost impossible to put into words. You just have to experience it for yourself, and you’ll need a Georgetown RV rental to maximize that experience.

Where to Park It

Places like Central Texas offer lots of choices when it comes to RV parks. Nearby Granger is home to the Retreat at 971 RV Park. It has 83 large, fully-equipped sites. There’s a bath house with excellent shower facilities, a large laundromat, and a nice swimming pool. There’s also an on-site convenience store and resident clubhouse.

The Berry Springs RV Park has mostly long-term residents, so it’s a very quiet place to park the motorhome rental in Georgetown. Two-hundred-year-old oak trees dominate both the park and adjacent Berry Springs Park and Preserve, which has a private RV entrance from this park. John Berry was a War of 1812 veteran and great-grandfather of Audie Murphy, who was World War II’s most decorated American soldier.

The Food

Smaller towns like Georgetown have a nice combination of neighborhood ethnic markets and large grocery stores, so you can always find something new and fresh for dinner tonight. Not surprisingly, fish is often on the menu. Central Texas has always been something of a melting pot. People come from all over, but they quickly become Texans. That diversity is reflected in the food as well.
