First settled in 1863, the town was built on a parcel of land owned by settler Dechman. In 1876, Dechman traded the prairie portion of his property to T&P Railroad in a move to ensure that the rail stopped in the town. The Railroad named this stop “Grand Prairie,” and eventually the town adopted the name as well to minimize confusion. Today, this small suburban town is known for hosting X Game trials, a popular skateboarding competition, and the Prairie Lights, a seasonal 2-mile-long display with more than 3 million lights. Grand Prairie is also home to the world’s largest flea market and one of the top disc-golf courses in Texas.

The closest large town is Arlington, about seven miles to the west. Downtown Dallas is 14 miles to the east. Fort Worth, its “sister” city, is 22 miles to the west.
