Located in Real County, Texas, the Wes Cooksey Park RV campground sits on the banks of the Nueces River and Lake Nueces. To the north is Rocksprings, the county town of Edwards County, while to the south is Uvalde, the county town of Uvalde County.
On arrival at the campground, you'll find the RV camping sites spread out under the shade of trees, close to the water's edge. It is in a lovely setting, right next to the Nueces Dam giving easy access to the lake.
Of the 30 available, there is a mixture of campsites, from full hook-up to water and electricity only sites. Pull-thru sites are available for those less experienced with rental RVs, and rigs of up to 60-feet can be accommodated. Although a relatively basic campground, there are restrooms with showers, plus a playground for the kids and some outdoor games.
The large city of San Antonio is to the southeast, and home to the Alamo, and many other attractions. A short drive will get you to the border with Mexico and a whole new culture.
A short drive west from RV camping at Wes Cooksey Park is where you will find Kickapoo Cavern State Park. Within the park are at least 20 caverns, with more likely to be discovered over time. Two of the known caverns are large enough to be of interest and available for guided tours. Stuart Bat Cave is home to a huge bat population, and every night they put on a spectacular show as they leave the cave to feed. The other large cave is Kickapoo Cavern, 0.25 miles long and home to an eight-story tall cave formation, along with other stalactites and stalagmites.
Kickapoo Cavern State Park covers over 6,000 acres and has numerous well-marked trails, including the 0.75-mile Tommy Seargeant Trail, that gives you spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. For a more extended day out, the Long Way Home Trail is a 6.5-mile loop that covers the northwest of the park and connects with the 0.6-mile Stuart Bat Cave Cut-Off.
The park is also home to hundreds of resident and migrant birds, including several rare and endangered species. Binoculars can be borrowed from the park headquarters, where there is also a bird blind. The park staff organizes guided tours of the caverns and birdwatching trips regularly.
To the east is Garner State Park, in a bend of the Frio River, on the way to San Antonio. The slow-flowing river is perfect for swimming and enjoying some time on the water. Paddleboats, kayaks, and inner tubes can be rented in the park, and the park concession owners can arrange to drop you off and pick you up if you want to enjoy a slow float down the river.
Add in 16 miles of trails, geocaching sites, miniature golf, and excellent fishing on the river, and it's clear there is plenty to do when you book an RV in Real County.
Just to the north, when motorhome camping at Wes Cooksey Park is the town of Camp Wood. This small community has some grocery stores and a small selection of restaurants, but you'll need to carry on to Rocksprings for more choice.
Rocksprings is famous for being the Angora Goat breeding capital of the USA, and each year to celebrate, the Top-o-the -World Festival is held every May to celebrate mohair and the production of the wool.
Have you ever dreamt of driving a tank? Well, your dream could become a reality when RV camping near Rocksprings. A short drive south from Wes Cooksey Park is a private company offering you the chance to drive a legendary Sherman tank, a British Chieftan, and even fire the gun on their live tank range! When you're bored of tank driving, there are flame throwers, rocket launchers, artillery, and machine guns to try out! This really is big boys' toys, but the girls can take part as well!
When you are RV camping at Wes Cooksey Park in March or April, and head into Austin to visit the Alamo, then you could be in luck and catch the Austin food and Wine Festival at the same time. Started in 2011, the festival celebrates the best food and drinks available locally, along with great entertainment from local bands—definitely, something to visit if you can.
Of course, no trip to San Antonio would be complete without visiting The Alamo. This iconic building symbolizes the struggle between Mexico and Texas, and to get the full story, a guided tour is highly recommended.
