Discover Wimberley, TX
Deep in the heart of Texas lies a unique landscape both beautiful and undeniably Texas. Texas Hill Country is the crossroads between West, Central, and South Texas, the border between the American Southeast and the Southwest, and when you book an RV in Wimberley, Texas, you’ll find yourself smack in the middle of it.
Wimberley is a quaint, quirky, down-home little town halfway between Austin and San Antonio. Hill Country is home to rolling hills, numerous cave systems, sinkholes, and, best of all, swimming holes. Point your Wimberley RV rental in any direction and you’re sure to drive into a swimming hole (hopefully not literally) and a welcome respite from the Texas heat. The soils around Wimberley are some of the best in the world for growing grapes and a Wimberley travel trailer rental is the perfect vehicle for a tasting tour of the region.
Wimberley’s proximity to some amazing state and national parks also means that you can cruise your Wimberley rental RV in almost any direction for a taste of the great outdoors and a night spent out under the stars. If you’re craving exciting urban fare, Wimberley’s close proximity to San Antonio and Austin, two of the most popular tourist cities in America, means amazing dining, shopping, events, and cultural attractions are just a short drive away. Public transportation is limited in town but the highways are wide open and easy to navigate with a Wimberley camper rental. So go ahead, rent an RV and mess with Texas.
The Great Outdoors
The best outdoor attraction in Texas Hill Country is hands down the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Booking an RV rental in Wimberley means you can make the 90-minute trip in style and air-conditioned comfort. Enchanted Rock is a massive pink granite dome, the largest in the U.S., rising against the rolling hills of Central Texas. The park is a favorite for hikers and rock climbers, and is considered one of the best spots for stargazers and photographers to document the heavens. Enchanted Rock is also a great place to study early human history with evidence of early human settlements dating back 10,000 years, and it is a great place to hunt for arrowheads and other artifacts. Although Enchanted Rock was voted the best campground in Texas in 2017, the park doesn’t allow RV camping. Full-service RV camping, however, is available in the nearby towns of Fredericksburg and Llano, each under a half-hour’s drive from the park.
Did we mention caves? The area around Wimberley is swiss-cheesed with caves winding their way through the ground. Guided tours are offered at some of the best, including Natural Bridge Caverns, Longhorn Cavern State Park, Cascade Caverns, and Cave Without a Name. You can never truly appreciate the sun and open skies until you experienced total darkness and an awe-inspiring stroll among the stalactites. And, did we mention swimming holes? Yes, we did. Cypress Creek, which winds through Wimberley, is home to a number of fabulous swimming holes where visitors go to beat the heat. Two of the most popular are Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole Regional Park. Both require reservations to swim and time is limited to two-hour blocks. But, what a wonderful two hours they are. The swimming holes are fed by artesian springs and the cool, clear water stays at a constant 68-degrees!
Canyon Lake is another popular place to cool off, just a 40-minute drive from Wimberley. Dubbed the “Jewel” of Texas Hill Country, Canyon Lake is an 8,230-acre reservoir on the Guadalupe River known for water activities. Canyon Lake offers swimming, boating, rafting, as well as hiking and camping. The Guadalupe River is also a favorite of fly-fishermen and tubers, who love the relaxing float down the river into the lake.
Camping is easy with your motorhome rental in Wimberley. Several full-service parks can be found in the city including Priddy Meadows and Green Acres RV Parks. Day trips to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area can easily turn into overnight stays.
Several RV parks and campgrounds are located in Llano and Fredericksburg near the park and offer full electric and water hookups. There are over a dozen RV-friendly campgrounds and RV parks surrounding Canyon Lake so you don’t have to leave the excitement on the water. These include the Canyon Lake RV Park and Cranes Mill Park, or you can let your kids run free at the Jellystone Park Hill Country which offers plenty of activities for the little ones or the whole family.
Exploring the City
Texas stands for many things and one of those things is BBQ. We’re not talking Carolina pulled-pork or St. Louis-style ribs. This is Texas and Texas means brisket. Renting an RV in Wimberley will be a great idea when you find yourself sleepy and full after a tour of the area’s dozens of BBQ joints. Tex Mex is also on the menu and the Wimberley area is a great place to load up on fajitas, chili con carne, and, of course, tacos. One of the best spots in Wimberley for tacos is the Shamrock gas station (seriously!) where you can grab a sack of authentic street taco goodness before hitting the road for adventure. For a little wilder time, Wimberley lies halfway between two world-class neighbors that just can’t be resisted.
Austin is the state’s capital and also the capital for foodies, artists, musicians, and your everyday, average weirdo. Drive your Wimberley, TX RV rental up and enjoy the shopping, dining, and cultural experiences that await in this southern music mecca. Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World awash in music venues, honky-tonk bars, and concert series including the renowned Austin City Limits and the world-famous three-day bash that is South By Southwest. When the curtain falls, you don’t have to. The late-night scene in Austin is packed with food trucks serving just about everything and plenty of dive bars to finish off your night.
San Antonio is the place to go if you want authentic BBQ, Tejano music, fabulous shopping choices, and a deep respect for history. One of the city’s biggest draws is the Riverwalk, a 15-mile long city park and urban waterway where you can stroll past mouth-watering restaurants, galleries, boutique shops, and entertainment. Feet hurt? Take a water-taxi, and cruise the river in style. After your river walk, don’t forget the Alamo, just a few blocks away and easily one of the most iconic historical sites in the country. Another must-go is the historic Buckhorn Saloon & Museum, a quirky joint where you can grab a beer and a heaving portion of Texas BBQ, and peruse the curiosities such as the “78-point buck’ in the Buckhorn’s two museums. History drips from the walls in this place like the sweat off your ice cold bottle of Lonestar. This is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Roughriders and Pancho Villa is said to have planned the Mexican Revolution.
