Just 20 miles outside of central Dallas is the town of Wylie, Texas, a perfect place to stay when exploring America’s fourth largest metropolitan area. When you book an RV in Wylie, you avoid the traffic and high prices that come with accommodations in the city, while also having the chance to see a town that’s off-the-beaten tourist path.

The city of Wylie was established in the 1870s under name of Nickelville. However, when the railroad was built half of a mile north of town, residents moved to be closer to the tracks and renamed themselves Wylie after one of the railroad’s right-of-way agents. It’s now one of the fastest growing cities in Texas and was rated by Money magazine as one of the “Best Places to Live in 2017”.

When you do decide to head into Dallas, you’ll either need to drive yourself or find public transportation from a nearby city. Dallas’s bus system only reaches out to the President George Bush Parkway, which is about five miles south of Wylie. You may be able to find parking at the Firewheel Town Center shopping mall in Garland though, which is one of the stops on the 513 bus route.

RV Parks Near Wylie

You shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a place to camp with your Wylie motorhome rental thanks to the many campgrounds and RV parks surrounding Lake Lavon. Lafon’s RV Park, Hidden Acres RV Park, Skyline RV Park, and Country View RV Park are all located on the peninsula jutting out into the southern half of the lake. All of them have full hookups. Additionally, there are a couple more parks just across the lake from the peninsula, on Lavon’s eastern shore.

There’s also Holiday Village RV Park in Sachse, which is actually probably one of the closest campsites to Wylie and has full hookups and easy access to the President George Bush Turnpike. If you need any extra food or supplies, there’s a Walmart located two miles east of the city on Highway 78. The nearest truck stops are about fifteen miles to the southeast at Rockwall interchange on I-30; these will be the easiest places to fuel up your Wylie travel trailer rental or RV.

Exploring the City of Wylie

A Wylie motorhome rental vacation will almost certainly involve visiting some of the nearby cities for their nightlife and shopping as Wylie is mostly known for its outdoor recreational opportunities on Ray Hubbard Lake and Lake Lavon. However, there are a few notable things you’ll want to do during your stay in Wylie.

As far as shopping goes, there’s not too much in the city of Wylie, however, the Firewheel Town Center in nearby Garland has a million square feet of retail space and big name stores. The mall has plenty of parking, so feel free to bring your rig down here for the day.

Craft beer lovers will want to stop by one of the local breweries, which usually have several of their latest concoctions on tap. However, if you prefer wine, there are several wineries and vineyards in the area to tour.

For a truly luxurious cinema experience, head to the B & B Wylie 12, which has twelve theaters and full-service dining - dinner and movie in one location. Or, make the trip down to Garland to see a flick at the AMC Firewheel 18.

Getting Outside Near Wylie

Both Ray Hubbard Lake and Lake Lavon are right outside of the city and have numerous hiking trails, fishing holes, and bike paths to be explored on a sunny afternoon. Animals lovers will appreciate In-Sync Exotics, the large cat rescue on the south shore of Lake Lavon. Tigers, lions, and leopards are all housed here, providing an educational experience and a sanctuary for the rescued animals. There’s also the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center in nearby Lucas, where you can get an up-close look at some beautiful birds of prey. The rescue center is open to the public on the first Saturday of each month.

Just looking for a place to stroll or relax on a picnic blanket when you rent an RV in Wylie? Wylie has three great parks within the city limits: Founders, Oncor, and East Fork Park. Oncor Park even has a nine-hole disc golf course and East Fork sports beautiful views of Lake Lavon.

If you’re up for a drive with your Wylie RV rental, though, Waco Mammoth National Monument, two hours south of Wylie, has some of the best-preserved skeletons of the North American Wooly Mammoth. Guided tours of the museum are inexpensive and allow visitors to see the fossil excavation site and the mammoth remains.
