We had a great time. The van was a great way to see the island. However, I was very disappointed with two aspects of the Hawaii Surf Campers experience:2) They charge $100 extra for cleaning, but don’t tell you this until the end. We returned the van in the same shape as we received it. However they claimed there was “some sand on the floor”. Ok fine, but they should have told us this would cost an extra $100 from the beginning . Instead we left feeling ripped off.
Now after looking at the reviews from other renters this seems to be their MO.

Hello Campbell good morning and thank you for your message about your rental. Also thank you for driving Tango around for a couple nights with your family as well as the kind words on our check-in methods.1 - WE DO NOT CHARGE A CLEANING FEE from every client, as a matter of fact, we rarely charge a cleaning fee because most of the time our clients do return the van clean as agreed during their check-in.
Unlike the outdoorsy client (you), we unfortunately can't post pictures on our reply, however after your rental returned there was also sand over the driver and passenger seat, on the driver and passenger cabin floor, as well as the top bed of Tango, which is indication that the van was not cleaned prior return. And unfortunately those pictures were not posted.2 - We also DO TELL AND WARN YOU about the cleaning fee, not only once but MULTIPLE TIMES prior and during you rental. On the first document you sign with us, it says in BOLD RED ALL CAPITAL letters, that you will be returning the van clean otherwise a $100 fee will be charged. You initial and signed that document. Not only there, we also have an app that lets you take a picture of the interior of the van prior your check-in acknowledging the van is clean and it will be returned the same way. Further, prior your check-out (your last day in the van) we send you an EMAIL as well as a TEXT MESSAGE reminding you that you need to clean the van prior arrival otherwise you will have a $100 cleaning fee to your card on file.With all that said, please do understand and acknowledge that your review does not portrait the reality of our operations. We do understand that NOBODY wants to get charged a cleaning fee and it is not cool, we do agree with that. However as said many times to you in person as well as written on our terms and conditions (which you said twice that you read and agree with them) we are not trying to take advantage of anybody, and we don't want to have to REMIND you guys about those terms you read as much as we already do. We are just trying to be respectful to our vehicles and other clients that will use them. When the van is returned dirty, unfortunately is an indication that the vehicle was not very well taken care of, so we do have that fee happening.

The 1982 Orange Westfalia 'Tango' was such a fun vehicle for my wife and I to rent on our honeymoon. We really enjoyed it's aesthetics however every morning on the first cold start had issues. We ended up bump starting it or using the internal jump to get the starter to turn fast enough. It's well finished, but at the end of the day it's still an antique van. Make sure you really go over how it works or specifically how to jump it from it's own battery. I'd also skip the $35 beach chair and just buy one from Walmart next time. So if you want a lovable quirky vehicle to live your North Coast Dreams, go for it. If you want reliable turn key transportation that is guaranteed to start with power steering maybe look elsewhere. I'd definitely rent it again, but if I wasn't mechanically inclined we would have been stuck waiting for a mechanic.

This was all around one of the best trips and experiences I've ever had. Tango was such a rad van and the best way to explore the island! The team also went above and beyond to make sure I had a seamless trip. Can't wait to come back again!

Hawaii Surf Campers was a great experience. Highly recommended to anyone interested in exploring Oahu on wheels and truly experiencing a unique and memorable experience. The checkin and checkout process was extremely easy and the staff were very helpful when going over Tango which was a joy to ride. Mahalo team!

Our trip went off to a bad start as we missed our plane to Oahu from Maui. Kept in touch with Lucas and he was most accommodating and let us know he could pick us up late that night or the next day. We flew in the next day and were met by Lucas. The entire crew was helpful and after a quick walk-through of the camper van we were off.

Hanging for 6 days with Tango was an amazing experience - what an epic way to explore the island. The van has everything you need. We were two people and felt totally comfortable cooking, spending the night, and driving around Oahu. Lucas and Tanner were excellent hosts and had all the right info (incl. where to camp...) to make our adventure as smooth as possible. Definitely recommend if you are not feeling Waikiki.

Lucas and Tanner made the rental process easy. This was my first time renting through Outdoorsy, and HI Surf Campers made it a great experience. Tango, the camper van, was solid and clean. Waking up on the beach in this beauty was a dream come true. We had so much fun on our trip.

Highlight of our trip to Oahu! The communication with Lucas was always great and he was very kind to help us with all of our questions. Tango was spotlessly clean and it really felt like home for the 3 days that we got her. It has everything you may need for a relaxed trip around the island. We did the north shore with it but it could be perfectly taken to other parts of the island. Highly recommended if you value to wake up in a perfect desert beach and avoid the crowds :) Obrigada Lucas!!!

We had a really awesome experience with Hawaii Surf Campers. Lucas and Tanner were so personable and kind, easy and flexible to deal with. They had excellent communication and were professional throughout our entire dealings. We rented Tango and loved it. We had 2 whole weeks to explore the island, and felt that was a perfect amount of time to really soak in the beaches that we loved. We brought our 2 year old daughter with us and she loved sleeping in the back of the van. We had so many people approach us to talk about how cool the van was and how the couldn't believe you could rent one. It was a more authentic way to experience the real Oahu we feel and are so glad we chose it over staying in Hotels/Air B&B.
We felt so free and life was easy!

The most amazing experience I've ever had! My Aloha spirit is wide awake! My husband went to Italy to rent a motorbike and I came to Hawaii to rent Tango xo! I traveled solo (eye opening and should have done this in my twenties!!!) Being an old van, Tango, naturally can only go so fast...so I slowed down the pace, took it all in, and thoroughly loved every moment. I camped at Mokuliea and Malaekahana. I beach hopped, sun tanned, swam in the ocean, read my book, hiked mountains, and SUP'd. Tango was dec'd out with stringed lights, fresh sheets, a tiny propane burner and a sink. There was also a cooler to keep a few groceries. #vanlife is my new thing and I would absolutely do it again! I highly recommend - whether a couple, 2 friends, or single...do it!!! Mahalo
