Sitting on the fertile banks of the Columbia River lies the sleepy little town of Kennewick, Washington. Together with Richland and Pasco, these three cities form the “Tri-cities” area, a pocket of culture and exciting attractions. Kennewick is thought to mean “Grassy Place” in the local native language, and the town’s summertime beauty is only matched by its powerful winter storms.

Kennewick was incorporated in 1904 but has a long history of being a frontier town, dating back all the way to Lewis and Clark’s infamous expedition to map the Louisiana Purchase for Thomas Jefferson. In fact, the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail goes straight through the city of Kennewick alongside the raging Columbia River.

With a revitalized historic downtown area has slowly evolved to be a pedestrian-friendly haven for restaurants, microbreweries, art galleries, and exquisite shopping centers. With only a few hours drive to either Seattle, Spokane, or many world-class outdoor experiences, when you book an RV in Kennewick, Washington it’ll be a brilliant choice for your next vacation.

The Great Outdoors

Washington state is an outdoors-oriented paradise with ample opportunity for recreation and relaxation. There are many parks and outdoor spaces in the “Tri-cities” area, especially alongside the Columbia River. The Columbia Park has a magnificent riverside trail as well as 400 acres of open space overlooking the water. With playgrounds, skate parks, barbecue pits, band shells, pavilions, and open grassy spaces for picnics, Columbia Park is the perfect place to unwind and beat the heat.

McNary National Wildlife Refuge is a collection of wetlands, river delta, and small islands that are crucial for migratory bird preservation. You can see countless varieties of local and visiting birds here if you enjoy birdwatching.

Sacajawea State Park, named for the important Native American woman who guided Lewis and Clark on their expedition, is right down the river from town and only a short drive in your Kennewick RV rental. The park sits at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers, and features many recreational activities like boating, fishing, hiking, and biking on its many trails that lead back to Kennewick. The park even has a wonderful history center where you can learn about the expedition of Lewis and Clark, and the importance of Sacagawea, the brilliant Shoshone woman who made it all possible.

Hanford Reach National Monument is a massive swath of land featuring both river and desert ecosystems, and is quite easy to get to when you rent an RV in town. This park was crucial to the war efforts in the 1930s and ‘40s because much of the uranium used to build the first atomic bombs was mined nearby. Now the park is a conservation area dedicated to preserving the 48 endangered and rare species that inhabit it.

Umatilla National Forest, just over the border in Oregon, is not too far to drive in your Kennewick motorhome rental and has lots to do and see as well. The area is rich with beautiful wildlife such as the moose, the black bear, and the bighorn sheep, and there are even recreational ski spots you can visit and use in the wintertime.

Perhaps the best place to visit nearby though is Mount Rainier National Park, just 2.5 hours’ drive away in your Kennewick camper rental. Here you can see two of the largest glaciers in North America, as well as Mount Rainier itself, an over 14,000-foot-tall stratovolcano that dominates the horizon. The park is a huge destination for mountain climbers and mountain bikers and has thousands of trails for you to hike and explore.

City Attractions

Just because the natural beauty of Washington is unmatched by most other places does not mean it is the only thing worth seeing when you rent an RV in Kennewick. The town is a gorgeous collection of historic buildings and lovely people who are warm and welcoming. The Gesa Carousel of Dreams is an over 100-year-old carousel that is still operational and offers you a glimpse into the past. The amusement ride was built and housed in Michigan for many years but was salvaged and moved to the “Tri-cities” area to preserve history and provide a nice place for families to bring their kids.

The Reach Museum is another family-friendly attraction where you can learn about the natural history of southern Washington, and how it was formed by volcanic activity. You can also read up on the Manhattan Project, the invention of the first atomic weapons, and how Washington played a huge role in winning World War II. The city of Kennewick even has a beautiful World Trade Center Memorial that pays respects to the many victims lost in the September 11th attacks in 2001. The memorial has a 6,000-pound piece of a steel column that was found amongst the ruins of the World Trade Center. There is lots more to do when you rent an RV in Kennewick, and the aforementioned activities can only be considered scraping the surface.
