Getting Outdoors

The reason that most people go RV camping at Mount Pilchuck State Park is to take on the three-mile trail that winds up the mountain to the summit. The old fire lookout is also at the end of the trail, and the view of the surrounding area is spectacular. The climb starts at 3,100 feet above sea level, and although steep and strenuous at times, it is a pleasant walk through old-growth forest to the peak at 5324 feet above sea level.

Once at the peak, you'll be able to learn more about the fire lookout tower. Several interpretive panels describe what the building has been used for and its changes throughout history. The views from the top of the peak are incredible; therefore it may be a good spot to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch. On a clear day, you'll have spectacular views reaching out to Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker, and the Northern Cascades. There is also a small, uncovered picnic area near the trailhead.

Bird watching and wildlife viewing are also both popular for those renting an RV in the area. Due to the mountainous landscape, you may get the chance to have a peek at the unique wildlife that calls the mountain their home. Pack a pair of binoculars and watch the skies. You might even be able to see some birds and animals from the comfort of your RV rental.
