Between Bakersfield and Fresno, California in California's San Joaquin Valley lies the mid-sized city of Porterville. The land on which Porterville sits was once thought to be useless with the coming of the first Spanish explorers, but this notion changed when gold was discovered in the region in the middle of the 19th century. The mostly agricultural area capitalized on the heavily traveled roads passing through its town to make money selling supplies to the prospectors and gold miners up in the mountains.

In a way, Porterville is still a gateway to the mountains, except gold is not the reason people visit the Sierra Nevada Mountains anymore. This incredibly diverse and beautiful mountain range is full of national parks and forests, and when you book an RV in Porterville, you can see it all.

These days, Porterville is quite a fun place to visit on its own too, with shopping malls, fabulous restaurants, retail centers, and a slew of awesome events. The Springville Apple Festival, the Iris Festival, the Porterville Fair, and several rodeos make for an amazing time no matter when you choose to rent an RV in Porterville.

The Great Outdoors

When you finally head to town to pick up your Porterville RV rental, there is an endless number of parks, forests, and recreation areas you can see and make use of. Porterville benefits from being close to some of the best national forests and parks in the country. Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park are two adjoining areas managed by the national park services, and they are not far from Porterville. Both are named for the majestic sequoia tree, one of the most massive tree species in the world. There are dozens of groves scattered throughout the park and forest featuring these ancient giants. There are a few thousand miles of roads and trails permeating the two nature parks, with over one and a half million acres of evergreen forest, rocky mountain tops, and strange monoliths.

Next to the national forest, you can find Kings Canyon National Park, yet another one of the region’s natural treasures. This incredible place is known for its spectacular mountain views high up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the massive canyon that it takes its name from. Rock climbing, canyoneering, bouldering, and trekking are fantastic ways to get a feel for the park, but there is no limit to the fun you can have there. You can find an abundance of campgrounds where you can park the Porterville motorhome rental.

Still haven’t gotten your fill of California’s stunning parks? Yosemite National Park might just be the crown jewel of the bunch. This world-famous nature reserve is home to cascading waterfalls, meadows of wildflowers, granite monoliths like El Capitan, and some of the world’s best rock climbing. El Capitan is a mecca for all sorts of climbing activities. Yosemite brings in over four million people per year, making it one of the most popular places to visit in North America.

City Sightseeing

Porterville has a few historic homes and buildings, but it isn’t the liveliest big city destination for those seeking bright lights and wild nights, nor is it a place with sports teams, museums, or many other attractions. The Zalud House is one of the city’s best historical places, and one of the most complete historical homes in existence. From the structure to the furniture to the details, this home will make you feel as though you have traveled back in time. One of the best parts is that every piece of furniture in the donated home came straight from the Zalud Family, making it a complete and accurate representation of how they once lived.

If you bring your Porterville RV rental to the nearby city of Visalia, there are a few other attractions to keep you occupied. The ImagineU Interactive Children’s Museum is a nice place to bring the family, as it is laid out for children’s entertainment and learning. The museum is designed to create hands-on learning experiences for kids, so they can better understand the natural environment, the natural sciences, history, and the arts.

Visalia Fox Theatre is a gorgeous old building in the heart of Visalia, built in 1930. Since then, it has been offering city residents a place to sit down, relax, and take in some good old-fashioned entertainment. The theater is known for its iconic architectural style, and the enchanting events it puts on throughout the year. This restored movie house has a large stage where theatrical performances, live concert events, and other entertaining acts can be seen in an intimate setting.
