Centered just north of the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth in northeastern Texas, Grapevine has a small-town feel while being in the middle of one of the United States’ largest metropolitan areas. The area was first settled in 1844 as Grape Vine Prairie and since then it has continued to grow. The area was once covered with wild grapes and the mild climate that supported this wild crop made the settlers turn to agriculture. The city of Grapevine continued to capitalize on their agricultural history until the relatively recent opening of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in the 1970s. Since then, the area has boomed with a variety of industries. Due to its central location yet easy access to the natural wonders of north and east Texas, Grapevine is the ideal place to rent an RV.

If you don’t feel like driving your RV rental in Grapevine around the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area streets, you can jump onto the Grapevine Visitors Shuttle, which will take you to many of the main areas of Grapevine, such as Main Street and the Grapevine Mills Mall. However, if you’re looking to get into either Dallas or Fort Worth and you don’t want to drive your Grapevine motorhome rental around the congested cities, you can take a commuter rail into the heart of either city from Grapevine.

When you book an RV in Grapevine, your world will open up to dazzling metropolitan areas, large lakes, woodland forests, and sprawling plains. Grapevine’s motto is, “Aged to Perfection,’ and as you spend some time in this one-of-a-kind town, you’ll quickly grasp the truth of that statement.

The Great Outdoors

Just about 20 minutes north of the city of Grapevine is Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. Set up on Lewisville Lake, this nature preserve plays host to a variety of outdoor activities that anyone can participate in. You can go on guided bird and kayak tours throughout the preserve or try your hand at fishing or enjoy one of the four hiking trails on your own. If you’re interested in history, you can visit the Log House from 1869, which is set up to look like it did when the Minor family lived in it over 100 years ago.

If you are a fan of the colossal beasts that once roamed the landscape, you can drive your Grapevine rental motorhome an hour and a half southwest to Dinosaur Valley State Park, near Glen Rose. With five distinct dinosaur tracks, some Sauropod (long-necked herbivores, like the Apatosaurus) and some Theropod (bipedal carnivores, like the Tyrannosaurus rex), you’ll feel like you’re in Jurassic Park as you go one the hunt for these amazing fossils. As you’re hiking around on the trails, be sure to keep an eye out for any other tracks that may have been missed. Also, in case the dinosaur tracks weren’t enough, just a short drive away from the state park is Dinosaur World, a large park filled with over 100 life-size dinosaur statues with a museum all about the Mesozoic Era.

About an hour and a half north of town is Eisenhower State Park, near Denison. On the picturesque shores of Lake Texoma, you can relax in the sun, do a little bit of fishing, and go for a swim in the lake. Eisenhower State Park is perfectly positioned at the merging of two ecosystems: the woodland forests and the prairie. As you hike through the park, you’ll see the changes from large trees to tall grasslands dotted with those famous Texas wildflowers.

RV Parks

After you’re done with dino-hunting and swimming, you’re going to need to find a place to park your Grapevine rental camper for the night. Luckily enough, there are several places around Grapevine and the greater DFW metro area that will give you everything you need.

About 20 minutes to the east is Sandy Lake MH & RV Resort. With full hookups, laundry facilities, restroom and shower blocks plus a swimming pool, fitness center, and easy access to fishing, you may want to spend a day at the park rather than exploring more of northern Texas.

Roughly 20 minutes to the west of Grapevine is Northlake Village RV Park. This ranch-vibing RV park with its full hookups, laundry facilities, restrooms, and shower blocks, and swimming pool will make for the perfect retreat from everyday life. You can even bring your four-legged friend with you, provided they don’t exceed the weight limit.

Explore the City

After you’ve explored all you can of northeastern Texas, turn your attention back to Grapevine itself. There is so much to see and do in and around this city that you’ll quickly fill the remaining days of your trip and be counting down the days until you can return.

If you want to see more of the city, take a leisurely ride along the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. Operating trains from the 1920s, you can go on a scenic ride through Grapevine and the surrounding area. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll be in town for one of their themed excursions, such as a jazz night or Polar Express ride.

If you want to get more of a feel of Grapevine itself, head to the Historic Main Street. Here, you can browse the local vendors, enjoy some local food, and even see a glassblowing demonstration. After your day of walking the historic streets, you’ll be delighted to discover that you are just a 10-minute drive away from both Legoland and the SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium and only about 15 minutes away from Six Flags’ Six Flags Over Texas Amusement Park.

A trip to Texas isn’t complete without indulging in some of that famed, dry-rubbed, beef barbecue. Leave the sauce at home, this slow-cooked beef gets its authentic flavors from the wood it’s cooked over.
