Abbey is a village in Division No. 8, in Saskatchewan, whose economy is based on agriculture, gas exploration and production, and tourism. This makes the village a scenic and enjoyable destination for anyone's vacation; it is located to the south of the South Saskatchewan River and east of the Great Sandhills. Its landscape is primarily open grassy fields with trees dotting the landscape here and there, and grain elevators stationed like giant sentinels watching over the prairie land.

It was incorporated in 1913 as a village, just after the railroad arrived and laid its tracks through the town. Over its history, Abbey has been home to machinery dealerships (selling farm equipment), garages, lumberyards, and other businesses. The town prides itself on its friendliness, ingenuity, and determination; during summer it is home to an annual rodeo that reflects its province's history, and it has social events happening all of the time, such as craft fairs, dances and comedy nights.

RV rentals in Division No. 8 are your invitation to explore this village and the province of Saskatchewan, the birthplace of many celebrities from the worlds of art, literature, sports and more. Other notable cities that might be of interest are Leader, Swift Current, Maple Creek, Tompkins, and Fox Valley. Swift Current is where many people in southwest Saskatchewan head to do their shopping and take a day for themselves, while Maple Creek is the region's showcase for all things historical. Your Abbey RV rental is how you will get there, in comfort and style.

Discover Abbey

The Great Outdoors

Cycling is a popular activity in Abbey and the terrain is perfectly suited for people of all skill and ability levels. It is also a great way to see the village and surrounding countryside at your own speed and pace. A walking tour is also a good way to explore and is the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of snapping photos. Of course, there is no harm in sightseeing from the comfort of your Abbey motorhome rental.

The Great Sandhills, near Leader, is a protected area inside the Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve and an active set of sand dunes that constantly shift and change shape. Visitors to this area can view antelope and mule deer along the ridge of grassland that establishes the edge of the desert. Hikers can enjoy the many trails running through the grassland, enjoying the scenery that includes aspen and willow trees, and sagebrush. Interpretive signs line the trails, explaining what you see; parking is available at the north end of the reserve and returning to the comfort of your Abbey camper rental is the perfect conclusion to a day of fun.

Crane Lake is an angler's heaven, providing fishing opportunities for locals and tourists alike. More fishing opportunities can be had at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, where enthusiasts can try catching brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Visitors can take out a boat and troll, or try fly fishing along the banks of Battle Creek.

RV Parks

Once you've picked up the motorhome rental in Abbey, you may need to drive a bit out of the city to find a place to park it. The majority of the closest campgrounds can be found 50-60 miles from Abbey. Most of the campgrounds have dirt-gravel pads with grass in between and picnic tables. Your Abbey travel trailer rental is how you will bring all the conveniences of home with you.

The Eston Campground has full hookups and a washroom-shower building. It rents by the day or week; reservations are recommended.

Exploring The City

The first things that will catch your eye in Abbey, Saskatchewan, are the tree-lined streets. They're everywhere, but visitors should be warned: they're addictive. History is important in Abbey, and this too is everywhere, from Abbey's historic firehall to the United Church with its stained glass windows. These buildings were constructed around the same time that Abbey came to be and they are a testament to the history and willpower of the citizens.

There is something magical about Abbey and about Saskatchewan in general; you can't see it directly but stay long enough and you will begin to feel it. One of Canada's and Saskatchewan's most celebrated poets was born in Swift Current and the province is a gold mine of literature, music, and sports. While taking your time to see this grand vista first hand, taking in the music and literature that was created here will bring you one step closer to understanding prairie life.

As the sun disappears over the horizon (and this can happen quickly on the prairies), thoughts turn towards dinner. There are a couple of places you can try near Abbey, one being a hotel-pub style restaurant and the other a Chinese venue. Life on the prairies is eclectic, so visitors should be prepared for the food to be similarly eclectic and interesting, at the very least. Don't forget that your Abbey luxury RV rental is a veritable kitchen on wheels and nothing is ever quite as good as a home-cooked meal. Agriculture is important here and the groceries you will buy are straight off of the farm. The only limitation to the evening's repast is your imagination.
