Ada is the county seat of Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, and is a small city, making it easy to explore on foot. The small size makes Ada a friendly community, and visitors here will have the opportunity to fully experience Oklahoma's hospitality. The city, incorporated in 1901, was named after the daughter of one of its first settlers and is the home of East Central University.

The city's economy is diverse, incorporating oil, natural gas, and manufacturing (plastic products, cement and concrete, auto supplies and the well known Wrangler jeans); manufacturers here continue to expand and invest in new technologies. It is home to the Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Center (an EPA water research lab), LegalShield (which markets pre-paid legal services) and the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation.

Ada has a long list of notable persons who are or were citizens, including but not limited to Oral Roberts, country music singer Blake Shelton, and U.S. Senator Robert Kerr. Many of these notable persons are professional artists and musicians. Ada's claim to fame is its frequent inclusion in crossword puzzles and its setting as John Grisham's first non-fiction book, The Innocent Man.

RV rentals in Pontotoc County are plentiful and varied, from fifth wheels and motorhomes to camper vans; there is something for everyone, regardless of whatever your needs may be. Other interesting nearby cities that might prove attractive to visitors are Oklahoma City, Ardmore, and Lawton.

The Great Outdoors

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is about 30 miles southwest of Ada, near Sulphur. This is an excellent area for fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, and other activities. The park varies from 800 to 1,200 feet above sea level. The landscape is compromised of sandstone (which is erosion resistant), shale and limestone (these last two being subject to erosion), which is what gives it its hilly terrain. It has numerous large and smaller streams, and several lakes, for visitors to choose from, meaning that guests of this park likely won't have to deal with large crowds of people. Keep your Ada travel trailer rental nearby and lunch could be your catch straight from the river.

Directly south of Ada, Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge is a nature preserve consisting of grasslands, woodlands, and wild plum thickets. Migratory birds reside here temporarily on their journeys, making this the ideal place for bird and animal watching. Your Ada RV rental is also the perfect bird blind, allowing you to view and photograph the various bird species undetected. Fishing is allowed here and the lakes are home to blue catfish, which can lay up to 10,000 eggs. The young fry feed on insects, snails, mussels, and crayfish, and can grow up to 100 pounds in size. Try getting one of those in your Ada motorhome rental fridge or freezer (you may have to compromise and share your catch with others).

To the northwest of Ada, the Lexington Wildlife Management Area is a good place to go fishing and hunting. The 9,512-acre park is also ideal for hiking and observing animals in their natural habitat. It has a gun range where you can practice; hunting within the park requires a license, though.

RV Parks

There aren't many RV resorts in or on the border of Ada, but there are a few within 25 miles of the city.

Twin Lakes Park has RV sites with full hookups (water, sewer and 30/50 amp electricity), WiFi, pull through sites and big rig access. The campground has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities and is well maintained. There are ponds where you can go fishing and swimming, and a playground; the campsite is dog-friendly and close to the city.

Near Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Arbuckle RV Resort has RV sites with full hookups, WiFi, and grills. The resort has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a seasonal swimming pool, and more.

Exploring The City

One thing that should absolutely not be missed when you rent an RV in Ada is a tour of the Wilson Football Factory. Tours must be arranged in advance and are approximately 75 minutes long and demonstrate the stages involved in crafting a football as the workers go about their jobs. This factory makes 3,000 footballs a day, for the NFL, CFL (Canadian Football League), U.S. colleges and most high schools. At the end of the tour, there are authentic, handcrafted footballs for sale, straight from the factory floor.

If one thing is evident about Ada, it is that this town likes their pizza. There are quite a few pizzerias on hand, all of them very popular; there are also Mediterranean, Mexican and Chinese restaurants for those who would like something different. Eat in or grab some takeout and head back to your luxury RV rental near Ada where you can dine under a starlit sky.
