Alliance, Nebraska is a town in the western part of the state. It is the county seat of Box Butte County. The town was originally known as Grand Lake; however, when the railroad came in the 1880s, the railroad owners wanted a name that was easier to put on the schedule. They wanted something that was only one word and close to the beginning of the alphabet; thus, they settled on Alliance.

As with many towns in western Nebraska, Alliance was predominantly a railroad and coal town for a very long time. Located in what is known geographically as a “cold steppe” climate and geography, it is great for moving a railroad. Cold steppe also refers to the weather; it has very cold winters and mild summers.

Alliance is located about two hours away from Rapid City, SD. It’s about three hours from Casper, Wyoming, and four hours from Denver. As you can see, Alliance is a fairly rural place, but it is close to many other states for you to explore on your outdoor recreational adventure. When you rent an RV in Alliance, you will be one hour from the borders of South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado. It’s a great place to start a tour of the Rocky Mountain states.
