The small city of Ashtabula, Ohio can be found on the shores of Lake Erie between Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania just over the border. This northern Ohio community shares its name with the Ashtabula River, a name that comes from the Lenape native language meaning “plenty of fish to be shared around."

In the 19th century, a concerted effort was made by the US government to push the native tribes of Ohio farther west out of the newly minted territory, opening up the land for settlement by European Americans. Ashtabula was founded in 1803, after which it slowly became one of the region’s most important port cities, responsible for high quantities of ore and coal passing through its docks. On top of that, the city is full of history, containing lots of stops that once belonged to the storied Underground Railroad that helped free thousands of slaves.

When you book an RV in Ashtabula, you are just minutes from Interstate 90 that passes through the northern area of Ohio along Lake Erie. Nearly the entire stretch of coast along the lake is ideal for recreation in the summertime, helping to establish the area as a lovely vacation destination.

Northern Ohio can be an excellent place to rent an RV due to the high number of state parks and recreation areas concentrated on the coasts of Lake Erie. Geneva State Park is one example of what you can find along the water’s edge, just a few miles outside of town. There is lots to do at this wonderful nature park, including hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and even snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing in the winter. There is a marina, several boat ramps, and a campground on-site to accommodate you and your Ashtabula RV rental by owner.

West Branch State Park is found to the south of Ashtabula, surrounding the Michael J Kirwan Reservoir. There are over 40 miles of hiking, biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling trails at this incredible park, and wide-open spaces for hunting too. The marina on the reservoir offer boat rentals, so you can get out on the water for some fishing or recreation. The campground on site can easily host you and your Ashtabula motorhome rental when you need a place to stay for the night.

Over the state line in Pennsylvania, Erie Bluffs State Park lets you enjoy mesmerizing views of Lake Erie from high atop gorgeous bluffs overlooking the water. In addition to archaeological sites and patches of old-growth forest, there are hundreds of species of wildlife present in the park, and sandy beaches too.

Down by Cleveland lies the state’s only national park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a lovely place to travel and stay when you rent an RV in Ashtabula. The park is small compared to other national parks, and relatively new too, but this shouldn’t deter you, you can hike through dense groves of deciduous trees in search of trickling streams, cascading waterfalls, rocky gorges, and archaeological sites left behind by native tribes hundreds of years ago.

RV Parks

Renting an RV is a fantastic idea when you want to explore northern Ohio, and due to the area’s popularity as a vacation destination, there is an abundance of RV parks nearby. Indian Creek RV Campground & Resort sits on the coastline of Lake Erie, offering visitors breathtaking views. City Sightseeing

Ashtabula is a pleasant place for a stroll or scenic drive, with breweries, apple orchards, and exquisite views of Lake Erie. The drawbridge in the center of town is an interesting landmark, and an impressive feat of engineering to say the least. The bridge is sort of a symbol for the small city, as well as a vital route through town.

The Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum covers the history of the Underground Railroad, in one of the route's most crucial cities. The house in which the museum resides is just one of many stops in town, all used to ferry escaped slaves up north to Canada. The home features artifacts and furniture from the Hubbard family, and you can take a guided tour to see the small structure that was instrumental in hiding and smuggling people to safety.

The Ashtabula Maritime Museum & Surface Transportation Museum pays homage to the shipping industry, an integral component of the town’s economy, both historically and in modern times. The museum is run in the former home of the Coast Guard chief and lighthouse keepers on the shores of Lake Erie, an appropriate place to put such an institution. You can see exhibits explaining the railroad systems, shipping routes, Great Lakes transportation, and an overall history of the county when you stop by for a visit.
