Ault is located at the far north end of Colorado, not far from the border with Wyoming. Close to both Fort Collins and Cheyenne, you’ll want to book an RV in Ault if you’re interested in seeing some of the less-visited parts of the state.

The town was named after mill owner Alexander Ault, who purchased the area’s entire grain harvest during a time of financial difficulties for farmers. However, some residents now prefer to think of the name as an acronym: A Unique Little Town. It’s earned that nickname thanks to the eclectic mix of shops in its downtown area and for its International Food Festival and Fall Festival held in October each year. If you’ve ever wanted to see a less touristy side of Colorado, getting a travel trailer rental in Ault is the perfect way to do it.

Discover Ault

The Great Outdoors

Colorado is a paradise for outdoor lovers and Ault is no exception to this rule. Just a short drive to the west are the Rocky Mountains and dozens of fantastic hiking trails. Nearby Fort Collins is surrounded by small lakes that are perfect for renting a kayak and paddling around for a few hours.

Ault also sits at the end of the Pawnee Pioneers Scenic Byway, a 128-mile stretch of road that traverses the Pawnee Grasslands and visits some of its most scenic attractions. The Pawnee Buttes, two 250-foot-tall mesas, are a great place to stop and hike around for a little bit.

To go for a run or walk the dog when you rent an RV here, consider the Poudre River Trail. The 21-mile-long paved path skirts the Poudre River and provides for some excellent wildlife viewing spots. However, if you just need a good picnicking spot, try Liberty Park in downtown Ault. Its grassy center and expansive trees make this a prime spot to enjoy the outdoors without ever leaving town.

RV Parks near Ault

When you choose a motorhome rental in Ault, some of the closest RV parks can be found in the nearby city of Greeley. The Greeley RV Park has amenities including full hookups, showers, laundry facilities, video rentals, and a gym. If you’re looking for a place to stay for a week or two, this is probably a decent option. Another place to consider is the Fort Collins North/Wellington KOA Journey. Like most KOAs, this park has lots of amenities for your RV rental from Ault, including full hookups, a swimming pool, Wi-Fi, and bike rentals on the premises.

On the western side of Interstate 70, you’ll find quite a few more rustic campgrounds that could be good choices if you’d prefer to forgo some creature comforts in favor of a more scenic locale. Riverview RV Park is just outside of Loveland and has full hookups along with a convenient location near to Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you’re only staying for a couple of nights it might be worth looking into getting manager permission to camp in the Walmart parking lot in Greeley. It’d be amenity-free, but the location near all of the city’s attractions might make it a worthwhile prospect.

Exploring the Town of Ault

Ault lives up to its name of being A Unique Little Town with a number of great attractions just a short drive away. Even without leaving the city limits you can have some fun. For instance, despite being a very small town, a surprisingly large number of antique shops line Ault's main street. If you’re someone who enjoys antiquing, pop into a few shops to browse around, then order a meal at one of the great restaurants near the crossroads of Highway 45 and 85. Ault is known for American staples like pizza and homestyle cooking, as well as café fare and Mexican cuisine. A short trip to nearby Eaton or Greely expands options to include steakhouse, seafood, Asian, and Italian restaurants.

If you’re into trains and have a camper rental in Ault, you’ll definitely want to check out the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley. Their display has some of the most intricate re-creations of the surrounding landscapes and there are usually a few regulars around to discuss the models with. However, if you love truly offbeat museums you’ll need to see the Lee Maxwell Washing Machine Museum. Yes, it’s actually a museum full of washers, dryers, and models of some of the oldest versions of the machines. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the appliances that clean your clothes, this is the place to do it.

Not too far south of Ault is Fort Vasquez, a brick and adobe fur-trading fortification from the early 19th century. It was used by a variety of French and English-speaking trappers to trade with Native American tribes like the Arapaho and Cheyenne. The fort is very accessible, located literally in the middle of Highway 85 -- the opposing lanes split to go around the building. There’s no reason not to see this historic site when passing through!
