Avon is a small town in Eagle County, Colorado, eight square miles in size. It has bus service within city limits and to neighboring cities around the county. Avon began as Avin rail station in 1889, then changed its name; it was incorporated in 1978.

Avon has a sister city, Lech am Arlberg, Austria. It is the only entrance to a resort three miles south of town; guests heading there must pass through town or along the town's border to arrive. Avon is very close to Vail Ski Resort and a short two-hour drive from Aspen, so it isn't surprising that the ski industry is important. Avon is home to an independent ski manufacturing company and was home to Vail Resorts' head office until 2006.

RV rentals in Eagle County enable a trip to a couple premier ski resorts or a summer sojourn to Colorado's rugged outdoor terrain without the expensive hotel charges. Other towns and cities within reasonable traveling distance include Silverthorne, Vail, and Wolcott. Rent a motorhome in Avon to begin your adventure of Eagle County and Colorado; where it ends is entirely up to you.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV here, you’ll find that Avon is perfect for hikers, with at least three mountains nearby. Grays Peak and Mount Evans are approximately 50 and 100 miles to the east, respectively. Grays Peak is a moderately difficult hike, and travelers here should be well equipped with water and good shoes. Guests who have conquered this mountain in the past all crow about the view. The view from Mount Evans is equally good but this one can be scaled on foot or by car (there is a scenic drive to the top). Taking your Avon camper rental to the top of Mount Evans is not recommended, as the road is quite windy, but park it at the bottom where you can relax after your hike.

Southeast of Avon, Mount Lincoln is a slightly easier climb but still challenging for the average person. In winter, Vail Ski Resort also encompasses nearby Eagles Nest and Battle Mountain, providing a selection of ski runs that could last you an entire week; in summer, it is yet another area that will both challenge and reward hikers of all levels (the ski lifts here could encourage some people to cheat, but those who are more interested in the view than the workout shouldn't feel bad).

RV Parks

There aren't many RV parks directly within Avon city limits (or on its periphery), but there are few within a reasonable distance of the city. Most of these are barebones and don't offer full service or Wi-Fi, but this is the perfect opportunity to see just what your Avon luxury RV rental will do. Grab some groceries in town (or whatever is in the cupboard) and enjoy a good home cooked meal under the Colorado night sky.

Sylvan Lake State Park in Eagle has RV sites; some of these are right on the lake and are close together, but have a small lawn between the RV sites and the lakeshore. Sites farther back from the lake have more room. There is a restroom on site and guests here can go fishing, kayaking or paddleboarding, while hikers can explore a short trail that goes around the lake.

Chapman Campground near Basalt has sites situated near a reservoir. The camping here is relatively primitive, with little to no amenities, but sites do have pull through access. Fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are allowed, but you need to bring your own equipment. There are restrooms but they are pit (camping) toilets.

Heaton Bay Campground, in the White River National Forest near Frisco, has sites that are paved, as are the roads in and out. It is within walking distance of Dillon Dam, where guests can fish for cutthroat, rainbow and brown trout. It has restrooms and some of the sites have hookups. All of the sites have picnic tables and fire rings, and firewood is available for purchase. Hikers can explore the Old Dillon Reservoir Trail as well as 50-mile long Summit County trail system which passes through.

Exploring The City

Avon, being the tourist destination that it is, offers a variety of tours that will reveal the town and local area in different ways. Visitors can tour by horseback, mountain bike, ATV, river rafting and tubing, and more. There is a science center that provides nature walks.

There is an indoor recreation center and a fine arts center (in nearby Beaver Creek). There are a couple golf courses in Avon and fishing tours for those who would prefer to catch their dinner. As the day winds down, there are spas and breweries that offer different forms of relaxation. Of course, the simplest, easiest ways to relax are sometimes best; pull out the camping chairs and enjoy the comforts of your Avon travel trailer rental which already has everything you need to unwind.

When it’s time to eat, Avon has a selection of establishments that run the spectrum of expense, from cheap eats to midrange outlets and fine dining. Customers have their choice of cuisines, from Italian and Mexican to Asian and American. There is even a Belgian restaurant, a bakery/deli and a bistro. The Asian offerings go beyond the traditional Chinese buffets and Japanese sushi to include Vietnamese. Most restaurants here are vegan and vegetarian-friendly, and you can always ask the servers for advice if you have questions.
