First settled by lumbermen in 1863, Beaverton is a small city in the heart of Michigan that lies on the southern shores of Ross Lake. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1903 and has (in more recent years) become known as the “Plastic Thermoforming Capital of the World.”

With its proximity to the Huron-Manistee National Forests and the waters of Houghton Lake, Beaverton is the perfect place to rent an RV. It’s a short drive from the cultural hubs of Midland and Saginaw while being under three hours’ drive from the bustling city of Detroit.

Discover Beaverton

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Beaverton and make the short drive north to the Au Sable State Forest, an area of land that was heavily deforested during the late-19th-century lumbering boom. Today, it’s a vital habitat for rare and endangered species, such as the Kirtland’s warbler, while being home to two National Natural Landmarks - the Dead Stream Swamp and the Roscommon Virgin Pine Stand. Marvel at this stand of old-growth red pines or head to the Mason Tract that’s renowned for its fishing, hunting, and canoeing opportunities.

Just north of the Au Sable State Forest is Houghton Lake, which is the largest inland lake in Michigan and named after the state’s first geologist, Douglass Houghton. It’s an incredibly popular fishing destination and well-stocked with almost every species of game and panfish found in Michigan. Visit during the summer to take advantage of the water sports on offer or coincide your visit with the large ice fishing and winter sports festival that’s held here each year.

To the west of Beaverton sprawl the Huron-Manistee National Forests, two separate national forests that together extend across almost one million acres of land. They feature thousands of lakes and miles of rivers that offer outstanding fishing and canoeing opportunities, as well as more than 300 miles of hiking trails. A highlight of the area is the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness on the east shore of Lake Michigan where dunes ranging in age from 3,500 to 4,000 years old tower around 140 feet in height.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Beaverton and head to the River Valley RV Park in nearby Gladwin where you’ll find a number of spacious, grassy campsites equipped with water and electrical service. There’s a private lake for swimming and fishing, as well as a paved basketball court and a sand volleyball court that guests are welcome to use.

A short drive east is the Pleasant Beach Resort and Cabins overlooking the waters of Wixom Lake. There’s a swimming pool, a boat ramp, and a remodeled clubhouse where you can utilize the park’s complimentary Wi-Fi.

If you want to stay closer to Beaverton, book into Calhoun Campground on the western edge of town that overlooks the beautiful backwaters of Ross Lake. Aside from their RV sites, there’s a children’s playground, a baseball field, and a fishing dock, as well as a variety of nature trails to explore.

You can also make the 30-minute drive south to Midland where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Beaverton and enjoy a stroll through town, stopping in at the Beaverton Library or for a game of bowling at Beaverton Bowl. Check to see what movies are showing at the Beaverton Gem Theater or just browse the independent businesses and antique stores that line the street.

Beaverton makes a good base for visiting Midland, which is packed with cultural attractions and engaging museums. Stop in at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art to get hands-on with a range of science, art, and technology exhibits or delve into the local heritage at the Midland County History Center and Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum. Also of note is the Bradley Home Museum and Carriage House that dates to 1874, with period-furnished rooms and an extensive collection of sleighs and carriages.

If you continue driving southeast, you’ll arrive in the city of Saginaw, which is home to the Castle Museum where you can learn about the people and events that have shaped the region. Browse the fine art, sculptures, and photographs on display at the Saginaw Art Museum or participate in a traditional tea ceremony at the Japanese Cultural Center. If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss a visit to the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum that’s packed with hands-on exhibits or the Saginaw Children’s Zoo, which is home to around 150 animals, themed gardens, and a beautifully painted carousel.
