Back in the early part of the 19th century, Bedford was originally a town by a different name, situated farther south than it is today. However, around 1825, its original location close to the White River was considered unhealthy because of a spread of malaria in the region. It was moved, and the name changed to Bedford at the behest of Joseph Rawlins, a local businessman who had relocated from Bedford County in Tennessee. This town was incorporated in 1864 and received its city charter in 1889. It was also a stop on the Underground Railroad, which helped slaves escape to freedom before the Civil War.
