A part of the original Charter granted to William Penn in late 1600s, Bedminster’s first settlers were primarily Scotch-Irish and German. The town was officially established in 1742 by the inhabitants of the area. Some of the town’s current inhabitants can trace their lineage to the original founders. Over the past three hundred years, the major industries were dairy farms, and lesser extent, wheat, and other crops, and other smaller enterprises like mining, milling, and carpentry. Many of the old homesteads, taverns, schools, and mills are still standing.

Today, although Bedminster, PA is primarily an idyllic farming town, its central location in between Allentown and Philadelphia, as well as close proximity to a number of state and county parks makes it a terrific place to visit.

The closest large town is Doylestown, about ten miles to south. Quakertown may be found to the west.

The Great Outdoors

Rent a travel trailer in Bedminster and a whole world of recreational outdoors activities will open up to you. The city is minutes away from Nockamixon State Park, one of the largest parks in the area. Clocking in at over 10,000 acres (when including the adjacent state game land), there are well over 30 miles of multi-use trails for you to enjoy. Nockamixon Lake, which divides the valley, offers plentiful fishing opportunities. Catch bass, channel catfish, sunfish, and more. Heads up! If you forgot your fishing gear or just want to give angling a try, the park lends rods out. All you need is your photo identification.

During the hunting seasons, obtain the appropriate permits for gun-hunting, archery, and trapping of small game and deer. Local dog trainers provide hunting lessons, teaching your pup to point (to indicate they have found a prey), quarter (a pattern the dog runs in the field), set, and a number of other techniques so that both you and your dog are safe. Note: it’s highly recommended that your dogs wear blaze orange at all times because the hunting season is nearly year-round. There are plenty of parking for trailers and motorhomes, so cruise on down your Bedminster motorhome rental and go adventuring.

To the east, there is a cluster of small parks: Ralph Stover State Park, Tohickon Valley Park, Prahl’s Island, and Bull’s Island (technically on Delaware side of the river) to name a few, all of which borders the Delaware River. Collectively, there are around 1,000 acres of land for hiking, rock-climbing, biking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and tubing. The Tohickon (To-hick-han) Creek, which winds through both Ralph Stover and Tohickon Valley, is reputed to be one of the cleanest freshwater creeks in the state. Exercise caution when exploring the rocky outcroppings along the creek. Copperhead snakes often lurk there. The park offers plenty of wildlife sighting and photography opportunities.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Bedminster, you’ll need someplace to park while you grab a few Zs. Though Nockamixon does not allow camping, there are several private campgrounds nearby. The Little Red Barn may be a good candidate. A family-oriented campground that has been in operation for nearly 50 years, it offers amenities like full hookups for your RV, a fire ring at each site, a pool, laundry, and restroom facilities, and free WiFi. This campgrounds is open only during the summer months, starting in late spring and would make the perfect spot for your RV rental.

Another possible alternative is Deer Woods Campgrounds located in Pipersville, run by Bucks County, is a more rustic, old-school campground. Aside from a dump site and restrooms, it’s barebone. Two things to be aware of: all motorhomes must be under 25 feet, and camper trailers must be under 18 feet. Pets are prohibited, also.

Exploring the City

Although this is a small town, there’s plenty of things to do and see in the area. Bedminster is located at the halfway point between Philadelphia and Allentown, making it an ideal compromise between the two destinations. Among many other offerings, Allentown has several top-notch museums, restaurants, and a small amusement park, the Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, which provides rides ranging from pulse-pounding to mild, gentle ones ideal for toddlers.

In the more immediate area, the Van Sant Airport has the self-acclaimed title of being the best airfield on this planet. Visitors can hop on a vintage prop plane or biplane, like the 1946 Piper Cub or the 1928 Bird of Paradise, and get an aerial tour of the rolling, picturesque Bucks Valley. Note that there are weight restrictions and several planes limit passengers to one or two people at a time. Should you be more adventurous, get behind the joystick with glider flying lessons!

Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle in Doylestown is a local curiosity. Built by an eccentric millionaire in the early 1900s, the buildings are made entirely of solid poured concrete, which was thought to be an impossible feat at the time. Henry Mercer was obsessed with tiles, like the type you might find decorating a fireplace surround and floors, and amassed a vast collection. A huge array of quirky and odd paintings and prints adorn the halls.

It might surprise you to learn that this part of Pennsylvania is very suitable for vineyards, due to its mild climate and gentle terrain. Wrap a long day of sightseeing and adventure by visiting one of the local wineries’ tasting rooms. They offer an assortment of white and red wines with charming names like “Tipsie Cow,” “Applenoonie,” and “Croc My World.” Do take care when exploring the Pennsylvania’s back roads -- deer seem to cross at an inopportune moment!

Should it be the quaint little off the beaten path Pennsylvania city that you are seeking, consider a motorhome rental in Bedminster. Explore a museum, catch a sunset, walk along a trail, and take in the amazing landscape. Rent an RV in Bedminster and set out on a fun-filled family adventure!
