Bellefontaine is a city in and the county seat of Logan County, Ohio; it was first laid out in 1820 by European-American settlers and incorporated in 1835. The first railroad reached the city in 1837, initiating its reputation as a railroad town. The railroads later fell on hard times, and today the city is a railroad thoroughfare with no station, but Bellefontaine is still considered an American railway landmark. The first concrete street was poured in Bellefontaine in the late 19th century; its location was Main Street, and when it succeeded, Court Avenue was paved with concrete too. Main Street today is paved with asphalt, but the original concrete of Court Avenue still exists as a pedestrian way with a lane open for one-way traffic.

Book an RV in Logan County, and you can choose from a fleet of RV makes and models perfectly suited for your excursion. Other towns warrant a visit while you're here. Kenton originally began as Fort McArther during the War of 1812. Marysville's motto is “Where the grass is greener." Piqua is thought to have been taken from a Shawnee phrase “He has risen from the ashes,” which is part of a Shawnee folk tale. Your Bellefontaine travel trailer rental is how you will see and experience these and other places in style.

The Great Outdoors

Glacier Ridge Metro Park was once covered by glaciers more than 12,000 to 17,000 years ago; more recently, it was farmland that was reclaimed to create an urban green space. The park is spread over several areas and connected by one of the trails that winds through all park sections. Visitors can hike or bike the trails, most of which are paved and not difficult; one trail designed for horseback riding is grass and dirt. The park is pet-friendly and has a disc golf course and a challenge course, and allows cross-country skiing in the winter.

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is comprised of forest, open prairie, and wetlands, stretching along the Big and Little Darby Creeks. More than a dozen trails crisscross the park, most of which are easy to moderately difficult; all of the trails are open for hiking while a couple allow biking and a few allow pets on leashes. The trails are either grass, gravel, or a combination of the two. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk and allows other activities such as fishing and hunting, picnicking, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and sledding. Park your Bellefontaine RV rental nearby, and you can retire to comfort between or after your activities.

Schwartzkopf Park is a cultivated outdoor recreation area with playgrounds, ball and soccer fields, public restrooms, and more. It has picnic areas, a trail for hiking, and an opportunity to fish.

RV Parks

Wapakoneta KOA Holiday is an RV campground that is open from March to October; the park is pet-friendly with restrictions. There are a heated swimming pool and miniature golf course, dog park, and a pavilion for group activities. Sites have electric hookups and either back-in or pull-through access. The park managers arrange social activities, and everyone is welcome.

Exploring The City

There are a number of things to do in and around Bellefontaine, and a good place to start is Campbell Hill, which is the highest point in the state. Once there, you will find a marker and bench at the exact spot, and can also get a certificate saying you've been there. There is an old Cold War radar facility at the site too. There is an underground cavern where visitors can take a tour, and there are also a few antique stores. History buffs can visit the Logan County Courthouse and the concrete walking street. There is a former movie theater that now hosts plays and other attractions and has great architecture (it has been restored and updated, but still has the Dutch design that made it a landmark). Before your vacation concludes, take some time to enjoy the open highway in your Bellefontaine motorhome rental; RV adventures can be addictive, and this is one of the reasons.

When it's time for dinner, Bellefontaine has exactly what you're looking for. One of the venues is a family-style restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ingredients are sourced locally, and everything is fresh and made on-site. Diners finding their way here should try the cinnamon roll pancakes. Portions are large, so don't feel bad if you take your leftover meal home to your Bellefontaine luxury RV rental for a late-night snack. Good food enjoyed under a star-filled sky and in your favorite lawn chair is what vacations are all about.
