Bismarck is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri that was first planned in 1868. Its initial growth as a community resulted from the success of local farming ventures and its proximity to the intersection of two railroad lines. The founders and city planners hoped to attract German immigrants and therefore named the city after German Chancellor Prince Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck. Bismarck was incorporated in 1877 as a town, but the status was revoked in 1881 and then reinstated later. With the exception of Main and Center Streets, all of the original streets in Bismarck were named after trees.

RV rentals in St. Francois County are plentiful, and your perfect choice for experiencing this part of America. Guests who would like to make the most of their trip should consider checking out some other nearby communities. Hillsboro is the home of Jefferson College's main campus. Lesterville is the home of the First Dawn General Store, which was the original bank/store/post office in the city and also the first to receive electricity or have a telephone. Salem's name is a derivation of the Hebrew word “Shalom,” which means “peace.” Your Bismarck travel trailer rental is how you will experience your vacation in comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Mark Twain National Forest is a working forest that is managed for nature restoration, public access, and timber and other resource cultivation. Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking and mountain biking along the many miles of trails that wind through the forest; horseback riding and outdoor vehicles are allowed too. Numerous streams afford an opportunity for canoeing and kayaking under the tree canopy and in open spaces. The park has a variety of landscapes such as bottomland hardwood forests, stands of shortleaf pine, oak and hickory trees, prairie, rolling hills, and the St. Francois Mountains, making it an ideal destination for nature viewing and photography. Park your Bismarck camper rental nearby, and you can enjoy its creature comforts in between forest explorations.

Buford Mountain Conservation Area was originally privately owned through a Spanish land grant, but it was purchased from the Nature Conservancy by the Missouri Department of Conservation in 1979. Charcoal kilns can still be seen on the mountain from when the charcoal industry flourished in the mid to late 1800s. Today the mountain and surrounding area have been reclaimed, and limestone stream beds and glades surround the foot of Buford Mountain. Visitors will find upland igneous forest stands and a type of granite known as Rhyolite left behind by volcanic activity. Guests can enjoy hiking, camping, and hunting within the park; however, the glades are open to walking only in order to protect the thin layers of soil and sensitive plant life.

St. Joe State Park is one of two off-road vehicle parks in the Missouri State Park system, and there are numerous trails for this purpose. Guests can also enjoy swimming at the beaches or having a quiet picnic. There are additional trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and overnight guests have access to camping facilities. There are several lakes where visitors can go fishing, canoeing, or kayaking.
