The origins of the name of the Blue Ball town has nothing to do with anything bad. Back in the mid-1700s, the town was originally named Earl Town. John Wallace built an inn, hung a literal blue ball out front, and named it the Blue Ball Inn. The locals, highly amused by the creative sign, started referring to the town as “that town with a blue ball.” It became an unforgettable landmark. Even though the original blue ball was removed when the inn was rebuilt in 1790 to make a larger hotel, the town residents decided to officially change the name in 1833. The hotel fell into disrepair and was torn down in the late 1990s.

Today, Blue Ball is primarily a farming community where everyone knows everyone, and the town matriarch has all the juicy details on the local scandals that she’ll happily dish out. Just a few short miles to Lancaster, Blue Ball is the perfect place to rent an RV and set out on an excursion.

Discover Blue Ball

The Great Outdoors

Even in the heart of Pennsylvania-Dutch farmland, there are several pockets of pristine wilderness. A Blue Ball RV rental will open up a world of adventure and fun. The French Creek State Park and the neighboring parks, Hopewell Big Woods and Crows Nest Preserve, collectively is the largest chunk of contiguous forests in between New York and Washington, DC. Several miles of multi-use trails wind through the mature woods over tiny babbling streams and through open meadows and groves. The park has been designated an “Important Mammal Area” by the Pennsylvania Game Commission due to a number of rare endangered and threatened animals that reside in the park, one of which is the black bear. The small lake is stocked with several fish, including trout, northern pike, and bass. Pennsylvania is well known for its long, hard winters. If people let the cold keep them indoors, they’d never see daylight. Ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating are all popular recreational activities at French Creek. Bring your Blue Ball camper rental with you, as there are several campgrounds with hookups in the park and nearby.

Another popular park is the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. A favored stopover spot for many migratory birds and waterfowls, hunters flock to this park. Some days, there are so many geese, ducks, and other waterfowls that if they take to the skies in one fell swoop, it can briefly darken the sky. Snow geese, rarely seen in Pennsylvania, are known to stop at this park for a respite on their migration to and from the arctic tundra in Canada. In addition to the few miles of established, well-marked hiking trails, hikers and hunters are permitted to go off-trail. For that reason, it’s recommended that hikers and outdoorsmen grab a map that depicts where hiking off-trail is strictly prohibited.

RV Parks

Don’t forget that you will need to figure out where you’ll park overnight when you book an RV rental in Blue Ball. There are a handful of campgrounds and RV parks in the area, all with varying degrees of amenities and accommodations. French Creek State Park has RV-friendly campgrounds, and though most sites do have hookups, the other amenities may be too spartan for some people.

Red Run Campground in New Holland has a variety of terrains for guests to choose from. Open space or in lush green woods? Each lot has its own fire ring for cookouts and s’mores, full hookups, and a small catch-and-release fishing pond.

Alternatively, Beacon Hill Camping looks out on the vast Amish farmlands. Near Intercourse the campground bills itself as secluded and quiet. Although it has full hookups and a number of amenities like WiFi and hot showers, there are no planned activities. In fact, they restrict the guests’ age to 16 and older.

Exploring the City

Though the city is as rural as it gets, a motorhome rental from Blue Ball makes it easy to go touring the scenic countryside. Explore the rolling hills blanketed by corn, wheat, and soy, and watch for ancient barns that are somehow standing in spite of enduring 100 years of harsh winters. Some Amish and Mennonite communities have farm stands and markets open to the “English," which is their term for the non-Amish.

Cherishing their privacy, most Amish and Mennonite families refuse to let the English visit their farms. However, a few have made an exception -- only for those who join a pre-approved tour agency. The Amish Village in Strasburg is one such agency. Visitors embark on a shuttle bus and learn about the Amish culture and history, and have opportunities to ask the guides questions. The Village itself has baked goods like genuine whoopee pies (which are nothing like the commercially made version) and shoofly pies, handcrafted furniture and clothes, and quilts.

At the end of a long day, sit outside a camper rental from Blue Ball, kick up your heels, and watch the sun go down over the green farmland.
