Brazil, Indiana, is a community located in Clay County that was incorporated in 1860. It was originally conceived in 1843, when William Steward (aka “Yankee Bill”) and Owen Thorpe were discussing the location of a township; Yankee Bill, responding to a question, suggested naming it “Brazil” as it was an easy name to remember (he had been reading about the revolution in Brazil, South America). The city's economy at that time relied on lumber from the lands that were being cleared and the coal that had been discovered locally. In 1956, the Republic of Brazil honored the city of Brazil by sending an official delegation to help to dedicate the Chafariz Dos Contos fountain, a replica of the one in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Be sure to get a picture of your Brazil RV rental next to the fountain, to show your family and friends back home.

Book an RV in Clay County and you are ready for a vacation like none other in this historical setting. Other interesting cities that should be looked at include Rockville, Greencastle, Spencer, Clay City, and Terre Haute. Terre Haute is located where the National Road intersects with the Dixon Bee Line, which is the reason it was once known as the crossroads of America. Greencastle is a combination of public parks and rich, private farmland, an opportunity to recreate to your hearts' content and pick up groceries fresh off of the farm. Bring them back to your Brazil motorhome rental to enjoy at your leisure.

Discover Brazil

The Great Outdoors

Owen-Putnam State Forest is a state park consisting of hardwood forests, ponds, rolling hills, and a sandstone bluff measuring 50 feet in height. Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking, fishing, and hunting deer, squirrel, and turkey. Photographers can hunt for pictures of the wildlife and bird species that exist here.

Leiber State Recreation Area is a scenic cultivated park with a nature center, an aquatic center with a slide and other amenities, and trails for hiking and biking. There is an activities field where guests can picnic, play basketball or horseshoes, or engage in other activities. The area has camping facilities and boat access to Cagles Mill Lake, and parking your Brazil camper rental nearby will allow you to enjoy the park and retire to the comfort of your home on wheels when you are done.

Cataract Falls State Recreation Area is a park centered around two waterfalls on Mill Creek. There is a half-mile trail between the two falls for hiking, and a second trail from the lower falls to Cagle Mill Lake. Each of the waterfall sites has a covered picnic pavilion.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds near Brazil, Indiana. Many of these parks have restrooms and showers, and camp stores. Visitors can enjoy hiking and biking on recreational trails, fishing and more. Most of the campgrounds are children and pet-friendly.

Turkey Run State Park has four distinct camping sections. Two of the sections are wooded and offer shade, the others are open and provide plenty of sunshine. The campground has paved roads, big rig access, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. The individual sites have electricity; some have pull-through access, some are paved. Some sites are available for tent campers. Reservations are recommended.

Peaceful Waters Campground has Wi-Fi and a playground. Some of the sites have water and electricity, pull-through access and gravel pads. Tent camping is allowed here but most of the sites are for RVs.

Exploring The City

There are a number of things to do in and around Brazil. The city is home to a children's entertainment center with live animals, games and activities, and more. Another children's fun zone has a swimming pool, arcade games such as air hockey, an open play area, and a food menu that includes pizza, gyros, and yogurt.

Near the city, you will find a covered bridge, one of many in the state of Indiana. Nowadays the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic only but it is considered a historic landmark; it's the site of an annual festival celebrating covered bridges, which is held in October. This is another good location to take a snapshot of your Brazil travel trailer rental, with the bridge or bridges in the background.

There is a feline rescue center near the city that is suitable for all ages. It is a shelter for larger cats that have been abandoned and/or mistreated; the staff is very knowledgeable about the different species of animals that they have and share stories with visitors about how the cats came to be there. The guided tour takes one hour but guests are allowed to wander on their own.

When the dinner bell rings, Brazil, Indiana, answers in style. There is a balance of locally owned and operated restaurants, and larger commercial venues, so there is something for everyone. One local diner serves up its fare a la carte or via the buffet. A pub-style restaurant has mostly traditional western items on its menu, but the portions are large and worth the trip. Guests here should try the Buffalo chicken salad and the Cajun crawfish bites. Don't be ashamed to take your leftovers back to your Brazil luxury RV rental for a snack the next day; it is quite possible you won't finish your meal and this food is too good to be left behind.
