Named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812, Burnsville is a picturesque town between the Cherokee National Forest and Pisgah National Forest. It was founded in 1834 and is still clustered with numerous buildings that date from this period.

Today, Burnsville serves as the county seat of Yancey County and is a great place to rent an RV and base yourself while exploring the natural wonders of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s within proximity to family-friendly campgrounds and just 45 minutes’ drive from Asheville.

Discover Burnsville

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Burnsville and make the short drive south into the Pisgah National Forest, which protects part of the Appalachian Mountains. It comprises three different wilderness areas - the Linville Gorge Wilderness, the Middle Prong Wilderness, and the Shining Rock Wilderness - with extensive trail systems for hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Follow the section of the long-distance Mountains-to-Sea Trail that winds through the forest or explore along the 30-mile-long Art Loeb Trail that affords magnificent views across the Appalachians.

Drive in the opposite direction, and you’ll arrive at the Cherokee National Forest, which comprises numerous wilderness areas and extends south into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s a major recreation hub, with everything from hiking to fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding on offer. You can challenge yourself along part of the legendary Appalachian Trail or attempt the 20-mile-long John Muir Trail in neighboring Tennessee, then try your luck at luring rainbow trout and brown trout in the Cherokee National Forest’s fast-flowing rivers.

If you want to get out on the water, head to Lake James State Park where you can enjoy boating, fishing, and swimming with spectacular Appalachian Mountain views. The lake sprawls across more than 6,800 acres and is surrounded by around 25 miles of hiking trails, many of which are also accessible to mountain bikes. Kids will love the short and educational Holly Discovery Trail while more adventurous trekkers can follow the historic section of the Overmountain Victory Trail.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Burnsville and make the short drive south to the Mountain Stream RV Park, which lies in the heart of the Pisgah National Forest. This pet-friendly, RV-only campground overlooks a tranquil stream, with full hookups, an outdoor pavilion, and a large grassy play area.

Also nearby is the Black Mountain Campground, another pet-friendly option that lies in the shadow of towering Mount Mitchell. Full hookups are available, and there is a range of recreational facilities, including a volleyball court, horseshoes, and a football-sized sporting area.

You can also book a site at the Yancey County Toe River Campground, a family-owned operation offering full hookups, or water and electric sites. There’s a covered pavilion, game room, and plenty of picnic areas, as well as a camping store where you can pick up essentials.

A 20-minute drive east will take you to Spruce Pine and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your camper rental near Burnsville and stroll through the town center, visiting the iconic Nu Wray Inn that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Learn about some of the inn’s most famous guests, including Elvis Presley and William Sidney Porter, then admire the Parkway Playhouse, the oldest continually operating summer theater in North Carolina. Another building of note in Burnsville is the John Wesley McElroy House, a Federal-Greek Revival-style house built in the 1840s that now functions as a local history museum.

Take time to browse the exhibits on display at the Rush Wray Museum, which preserves the history of Yancey County. Learn about life in the region for the early settlers and the county’s role in the American Civil War. Native American artifacts are also displayed in the first-floor rooms, including objects from the Paleo, Archaic, and Woodland periods.

A short drive west of Burnsville will take you to the Bald Creek Historic District, which comprises 18 contributing buildings and a number of heritage-listed structures. Admire the excellent examples of Rustic Revival style and American Craftsman architecture as you explore the turn-of-the-20th-century C.W. Burton House and the Burton-Howell House that dates from the Great Depression years. Also of note is the mid-20th-century Bald Creek United Methodist Church and the charming Bald Creek Elementary School and Gymnasium that was built in 1938.

Burnsville is home to numerous grocery stores where you can pick up food and supplies, as well as a good selection of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your campervan in Burnsville.

Whether you’re visiting Yancey County for its scenic wilderness areas or historic architecture, book an RV in Burnsville and start planning your next excursion.
