The exact founding date of Butler is unknown. A former farming town, the Butler family, purchased a stately-yet-modest home in a few years before the Civil War started. What sets the Butler family apart is they were the only pre-Civil War African-American family to own property in Maryland. The Butler family operated a small farm. Up until the early 2000s, the home was owned by the direct descendants of the original Butler family. Henry Alexander Butler, the head of the family, was a respected community leader, and at some point, the town that grew around the farm was named after him.

Today, Butler is the home of several old, upper-class families. Many equestrian events are held in Butler, including the Hunts Cup and Grand Nationals. Unsurprisingly, many of the properties in the community also include horse farms and breeding programs. Several homes and buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Great Outdoors

A travel trailer rental will make it easy to find the perfect wilderness park to explore in. Several miles of hiking trails follow the perimeter of the Liberty Reservoir, serpentining through mature woods and meadows. Fishing and boating are popular activities on the man-made lake. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish like smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and walleye. Be aware that, because the reservoir is Baltimore’s drinking water, swimming is not allowed.

To the north, near Hampstead, the Prettyboy Reservoir and Gunpowder Falls State Park encompasses several thousand acres. In addition to nearly a hundred miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, the park is open to archery hunting of small game during the appropriate season. Photographers and nature lovers will enjoy this park, particularly in autumn when the maple and oak trees transform and turn the treetop canopy into a virtual blaze fire. Wildlife is abundant, and the sharp-eyed outdoors-person may spot a variety of species like white-tailed deer, beavers, porcupines, wolves, and foxes. Several species of rare and endangered animals make their home in this area as well, like black bears and gray wolves. Although overnight camping is not allowed, the parking lots can accommodate an RV rental, and there are a few dump stations.

RV Parks

Even out in the farm country, it’s generally frowned upon to park a rental motorhome on the streets. When you book an RV rental in Butler, MD, be sure to find a place to park overnight, too. There are a handful of RV campgrounds and parks in the area, however. Merry Meadow Recreation Farm in Freeland is a full-service luxury campground. It offers a number of fun activities for both children and adults alike. Driving range, a playground, and even a mechanical bull.

Closer to Baltimore, the Ellicott City campground at Patapsco Valley State Park has full hookups, and although amenities are barebone, restrooms and shower facilities are offered.

Walmart is known for being friendly to the RV community. In a pinch, stay at one of a handful of Walmart stores within a 10-mile radius. The closest is in Cockeysville.

Exploring the City

Out in the farm country, it’s easy to think that there isn’t much to do. On the contrary, with a Butler motorhome rental, getting around to various sights and landmarks is a snap. Grapes thrive in Maryland’s mild, temperate climate. Wineries are a thriving business. The award-winning Basignani Winery’s tasting room is set in a charming fieldstone building that overlooks acres of grape vines laid out in neat, tidy rows. Based in Sparks-Glencoe, the winery also hosts several live entertainers throughout the year.

Crabs, golfing, and Maryland seem to go hand-in-hand. There are several public and private golf courses in the area, many of which were designed by top course architects in the world. Explore them all in a luxury RV rental. Greystone Golf Course in White Hall is considered one of the top fairways in the Baltimore area. Designed by Joe Lee, who also designed the famed Blue Monster at Doral Resort, this fairway will be challenging for beginners without boring the experienced golfers. The Graystone also has putting and chipping greens for practice.

No visit to Baltimore is complete without sampling crabs fresh out of the Chesapeake Bay. Pappas Restaurant is a local favorite that has been made popular by Oprah. For a good reason, too. Pappas has won several culinary awards for its to-die-for crabcakes and other dishes over the years.

The Hunts Cup and the Grand National Steeplechase both are held in Butler, MD, annually, usually in April. It’s an opportunity to see athletic horses at their finest. The courses are surprisingly challenging, quite different from groomed dirt tracks seen at the Kentucky Derby and other racecourses. Horses must dodge or sail over natural obstacles like fallen trees and hedges.

Explore the idyllic farmlands of Maryland and make new memories in a Butler RV rental.
