Capitol Heights, Maryland is a little suburb of Washington D.C. and is also just 15 miles northeast of Alexandria. It's a great place to rent an RV, as it’s far enough from the city that you can avoid the crowds but still be within easy traveling distance of the city to enjoy all the attractions it has to offer. If you’re a sports fan, FedEx Field, where the Washington Redskins play, is just one town over in Landover, making it very convenient to catch a game while you’re here.

Capitol Heights also has excellent access to D.C. via the metro, so when you rent an RV here, there’s no need to take it into the city. The area around the Capitol Heights metro stop has seen quite a bit of development in recent years too and is where many of the trendiest restaurants and shops are now located.

Discover Capitol Heights

The Great Outdoors

There are plenty of amazing outdoor destinations to visit when you get a motorhome rental in Capitol Heights. One of the most beautiful and the closest is the United States National Arboretum just across the Anacostia River from Capitol Heights. The 400+ acre park is a fully functioning research facility featuring flowers and trees from around the world along with public art installations from nationally renowned sculptors.

Another great place to visit when you book an RV in Capitol Heights is the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail a few miles away in Oxon Hill. The 3.5-mile path connects Maryland’s National Harbor District with Alexandria, Virginia, passing over the beautiful Potomac River. It also links up with the Mount Vernon Trail on the Virginia side of the river if you’d like to extend your outing.

Both of those areas have a decidedly urban feel to them though; if you want to experience a more rustic form of nature, you might prefer Jacksons Landing on the Patuxent River, southeast of Capitol Heights near Upper Marlboro, MD. The river is quite popular with kayakers, and there are a number of hiking and biking trails on both sides of the river. If you’re interested in learning more about the culture of the area, stop in at the small Patuxent Rural Life Museum.

RV Parks

The D.C. area’s urban density prevents there from being a whole lot of RV parks nearby, but there are several campgrounds located along the Patuxent River. The river is designated as a water trail and is quite popular with kayakers, but there are primitive sites where you can park your rig when you get a camper rental in Capitol Heights. There are no hookups available, but you can’t beat the beautiful setting.

A less convenient option, but with quite a few more amenities, is the Port Tobacco RV Resort on the Chesapeake Bay. It’s farther from Capitol Heights but offers full hookups, a boat ramp, playground, and is close to some great restaurants and shopping. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to stay when you choose an RV rental in Capitol Heights, this could be a good option.

You might also consider camping in the parking lot of one of the Walmart stores in the area. You’ll need to get the manager’s permission first, and there won’t be any amenities available, but it might not be a bad option if you’ll only be staying a couple of nights.

Exploring the City

There’s no shortage of great attractions in the nation’s capital, so your biggest concern will simply be planning how to get to all of them. Most visitors to the city will hit up the major sites: the White House, Capitol Building, Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln Monuments, and the Supreme Court. But there’s also the Smithsonian Museum, which consists of over a dozen world-class museums focused on everything from African-American history to space flight.

Whether you’ve got the kids in tow or just feel like being a kid when you get a travel trailer rental in Capitol Heights, you’re sure to love a visit to Six Flags America amusement park just outside of town. The park has several iconic theme rides including a Mardi Gras celebration featuring a street decorated to look like Colonial America. For the thrill seeker, there are nine roller coaster rides on the premises.

If you’re looking for quality shopping in the capital region though, look no further than the outlet mall in National Harbor. The budget-friendly stores here have great deals on overstock items from some of the most popular clothing and home brands. For exquisite food, you should swing by the Union Market in D.C., which is a foodie's paradise both in terms of variety and quality. Everything from seafood to pastries and sandwiches is available, and all of it is exceedingly delicious.
