In the 1820s, a wealthy Texan landowner by the name of Stephen F. Austin started an incentive program to entice more people to Texas. Called the Old Three Hundred, one of the pioneers, Alexander Calvit, was drawn to Texas by this program. He went on to create a highly successful sugar plantation, which was continued by his daughter’s husband. In 1881, Solomon J. Clute purchased the land, and a very small settlement formed. It was unofficially called Clute’s Place for many years. The town didn’t quite take off. Records show that as of 1933, Clute had only 10 residents. When Dow Chemical moved into the area in the 1950s, though, the population skyrocketed to 3,000. Only then was Clute officially founded as a town, in 1955.

Clute, TX gained some minor fame in 2003 when a mammoth was discovered in a sand pit. It’s the first and only mammoth found near the Texas coast. The mammoth was carbon dated and found to be about 33,000 years old, and likely was a Columbian mammoth, which is a cousin of the better-known wooly mammoth. Remnants of bison, horses, deer, and turtles were also found in the same pit.

Clute is known for its annual festival, The Great Mosquito Festival, which has been hosted every July since the early 1980s. The festival typically draws 18,000 people each year.

Discover Clute

The Great Outdoors

Due to an abundance of saltwater marshes, lakes, ponds, and beaches, Clute is well known for a sizeable mosquito population. Experienced hikers and outdoorsmen don’t let that stop them from enjoying nature. When the biting flies get to be too much, a Clute motorhome rental is a welcome retreat. Minutes from Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area, birders, photographers, and nature lovers will have plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Hundreds of different species, drawn to the varied aquatic environments, make their nests. Roseate Spoonbills, which were once endangered, have made a recovery and are thriving in this area.

A few miles farther west, Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles often nest on the beaches in the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. Beach-goers should be aware that these nests should not be disturbed. Violators will be slapped with hefty fines. Although these coastal parks don’t have campsites, parking that can accommodate an RV rental is plentiful.

RV Parks

When you search for an RV rental in Clute, TX, don’t forget to plan for overnight parking. There are hundreds of RV parks and campgrounds with different types of amenities. Kountry Ranch RV Park in Freeport bills itself as the best RV park in the area. Few minutes from several towns, and possibly more importantly, from the beach, it also offers 20, 30, and 50 amps hookups, free wifi, and a security system in place.

Live Oak RV Park may be a good candidate as well. About a mile south of Lake Jackson. It’s on the outskirts of Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Park, conveniently close to a couple of hiking paths. A creek hooks around the property, making it very easy to catch a string of fish for supper.

Exploring the City

There’s no need to embark on a thousand-mile journey to find something to do in this part of Texas. A luxury RV rental makes it easy to explore the area in style. The Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences in the heart of Clute welcomes both local and national visitors. Past events have included off-Broadway plays, musicals, art workshops, symphonies, and educational/science programs. Check online for the schedule of the upcoming events.

Swim with the dolphins! All along the warm Galveston coast, there are charter boats and tour groups that will take its guests on a tour of the Galveston Bay, and most tours include visiting the resident pods of dolphins. The lucky boat spotters may also sight several species of sharks, including bonnethead and hammerhead sharks, and large turtles that dwell in the warm waters. A handful of agencies will take its guests farther out into the Gulf of Mexico where a number of whales are known to swim, including Orcas, Bryde’s Whales, a particular type of baleen whale, sperm whales, and even humpback whales.

Texas and golf seem to go hand in hand. There are several courses in the Texas Coast area, many of which were designed by world-class golf architects. Columbia Lakes Resort in West Columbia was designed by Tom Fazio, who is one of the top architects in the world. Also on-site is a driving range and a putting green so that golfers can work on finessing their skills.

And of course, no visit to southern Texas is complete without a stop at one of the beaches. Several beaches on Galveston Island are open to the public. And of those that aren’t, many have a day pass available. The Stahlman Park is a popular day-use beach with a crabbing pier.

You don’t have to go far to find an adventure of a lifetime in your Clute RV rental. The sun-drenched Texas coast is full of friendly locals, fun activities, and gorgeous scenery.
